They knocked half this building down, left it for a bit, then knocked the other half down. Why and where is it?

Was it the one time prison Governors house at the junction of Lodge rd and Winson Green Rd.

I can't imagine why they would demolish it in two half's. Perhaps they were meaning to keep the one half, but as they failed to scaffold, support and strut it. Its likely that it began to lean and became dangerous.

The whole job looks dangerous. It was obviously done before the regs about street fronting properties being demolished had to be scaffolded and dust sheeted came in.

No Phil, its not in Winson green. If it helps, it comes from an area in the south of the city.

The south is a big area, I think you will have to be a little more succinct than that or this post will get lost down in the bowels of the forum. Is it Edgbaston. Pershore Rd, Bristol Rd way. It looks that sort of house.

Phil

It is within a mile of the centre of Kings Heath. That should concentrate the minds

No Bob. its not as complicated as that. Bit more help . Its in Kings Heath itself.
Phil said in an earlier problem that too many people in the forum read books. Obviously nobody has read the book this one came out. Only bought it a few days ago.

No Jean. It wasn't a listed building that the developers were trying to knock down on the quiet. Think everyone. Building in centre of kings heath, church associations.

Is it the building that was there before St Dunstan's church? I know St Dunstan's is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

No it wasn't anything to do with ST. DUNSTANS church. Isn't there another church in Kings Heath?

Congratulations Lloyd. You've won a metaphorical coconut. The half building is the original All Saints vicarage, built in 1870. In 1955 it was decided to replace it with a brand new spanking modern vicarage, and half was knocked down. The vicar and his brood lived in the other half until 1956 while the new vicarage was built on the site of the old one, the remains of the old one then being demolished. As with all spanking modern new 1955 buildings, the "new" vicarage was then demolished in 2007. The book is not clear what happened to the poor vicar then. Maybe he had to be like Elizabeth 1st and make a royal progress round the parish moving from house to house.
