Where is This? 36

Phil

Gone, but not forgotten.
Lets try a bit of culture and learning this time. Who can tell me where this delightful work of art stands.

Phil,
I don't know where it is but know I had a senior moment trying to post a Where is it? and used up No. 36 diguised as No. 34 so the nnext (yours) should be 37. Perhaps the Mods could correct it for us.
Soreeee,

Mike

In the long run I don't think it will make any difference, the only reason I start a new thread for each location is because of the instructions I was given by the moderators when restarting this thread I just add numbers as a reference point. Otherwise I would just keep tagging on to the end of the current thread as well.

Phil I've seen the statue and it won't come to mind. Pete said he has as well. Might get a brain flash later on like I did with the name of the Queslett road pub. Thanks Phil. Jean.

It just off Steelhouse lane at the top end near to the what was the Post and Mail building if memory serves me well there are a number of solicters offices that suround it sor the life of me I cannot remmeber the name of the building you turn right just past the dry cleaners

Lloyd I will give you and Tom shared honours

You are right, like so many of Birmingham’s works of art it is by William James Bloye. This is the information I have other than a knowledge of the fact that he sculpted many artistic additions to many public buildings and commercial premises in and around Birmingham.

Title Mermaid Fountain
Sculptor Bloye, William James
Assistant Kings, Raymond Forbes
Date of design 1960-61
Location Edgbaston Park Road
Precise Location Student's UnionBuilding, University of Birmingham, Mermaid Court

Bloye was commissioned to design this fountain, as well as the mermaid relief on completion of the extension of the Students Union building in 1960. The university coat of arms depicts a mermaid, hence the choice of subject.
The mermaid has a blissful expression on her face, which together with the upward surge of her body and open arms worshipping the sun, expresses joy. The figure stands on top of an elaborate two-tiered bowl, shaped like a scallop, which is itself in the centre of a shallow water filled basin.

Here are a few more examples of Bloye's work. I think most people will recognise them.

There is no current "Where is This?" that has not been solved. From 1 to 172. Although your interest is appreciated. You are just wasting your time.

I am wondering if there is not a case for these to locked once the location is confirmed by the originator? Or maybe a short time after?
