Where is This? 31

Phil

Gone, but not forgotten.
Right lets find out who the drinkers were again, what is the name of this pub and where was it? I can tell you it was thought to be one of the oldest in the area and that it was built in 1933. I can also tell you that this photo had to be taken after 1973.

Try the other side of town, the Blues side. I'm sorry its not the Ratpan/Uppergounds this is what that looks like.

I know its the Blues side, I know I have passed it by where the flyover used to be.

I'm afraid its none of those, and although I said it was the Blues side of town, it does not have to be by the blues grounds.

Astonian

Sorry not the right answer. no more replies now until late tonight as I am out for the day.

Phil

I don't recognize it, probably because its not my side of town but Phil's clues shouldn't be overlooked . If its possibly the oldest pub in the area but was only built in 1933 it must be one of the outlying areas of the City where inter-war development took place, perhaps out as far as Sheldon area, and I presume the pub's name, even if not the original one, must be something which didn't exist before 1973. After all that I'm no closer!

I don't know this pub, but 1933? Look at the original house beyond the later one storey extension, that's very old. 1833 perhaps, but not 20th century.
I note a high brick wall behind (right) with a lighting pole - a railway yard?
After 1973? Is that the time of a change in M&B's corporate image, or did the pub belong to a different brewery before then?
I'll guess at somewhere near the Hockley goods yards.

I must confess I thought the pub must have been built in retro style Lloyd! Has he tried to throw us off the scent with a typo.
Phil did say it was on the Blues side of town so that would presumably rule out Hockley or Aston (unless he meant to say Villa side of town!)

Bob

Ah, forgot the Blues reference.
Somewhere near the elevated railway behind Digbeth, then? Bordesley Street / Little Ann Street / Adderley Street areas?

I am terribly sorry, but I have misled you with the date of 1933. It was a typo and should have read 1833 as Lloyd pointed out.

After dropping such a clanger. I feel some more clues are in order. The high brick wall Lloyd mentions has nothing to do with the railway and in fact is a gable wall of a factory that a friend of mine had built when he relocated from somewhere else nearby 1n late 1973.

Because I made such a mess of things I will tell you it is located in Balsall Heath.

There I have give it you on a plate.

Don't like pub grub Phil. Ha Ha. Is it an Irish bar Phill. The name won't come to me at the moment. Jean.

Sorry nobody has got the right one yet, Jean I suppose it was no more an Irish Bar than any pub in that district was at the time.

I suppose another clue is in order, Lloyd mentioned the railway earlier, well the railway track was opposite this pub and it runs parallel with the road it is on for quite some distance.

Woodfield Road was only a backstreet that didn't have any pubs at all I think it did have an outdoor at one time. This pub had a main road location. If you ever rode on the No 50 bus you would have passed it, if you were going to Moseley or Kings Heath or further afield.

Phil

Phil,
Hic, hic..toured the pubs of hic Balsall Heath...hic hic...last night. Still didn't hic...hic...hic..find it.

Ann

Moseley Road? I live near the Maypole and used to use the 50 every day, still don't remember it. It must be long gone, over 20 years ago?

I used to work for a short time at Butchers Transfer Printer's but can't recall it.

Ann B - from what I've heard walking around the streets of Balsall heath at night might not be a good idea these days, your purpose could be misconstrued, so I'm glad you were only joking!!
Bob

What do you mean these days - I saw many sights that a 15 year old should not have been exposed to when I worked there so so many years ago.

No still not right, There is obviously a shortage of ex residents of Balsall Heath on this forum. One more clue, if you started a pub crawl at The Shepherds Rest on the corner of Mosely Rd and Bradford St by the time you got to this pub you would be asking for your fifth drink.

One comment about Balsall Heath, much has been said over the years about the red light district the 50's and 60's of Varna Rd, Princess Rd and surrounding area, I never thought it was all that bad. It was a crime to demolish all those lovely old Victorian houses and replace them with the boxes that were erected in their stead.

All they did was move the problem to Chedar Rd, where it became a farce, but they didn't demolish those houses to get rid of the problem, did they?

At the risk of moving off topic my comment earlier is related to the fact that if you drive along the Pershore Road there are prominent signs on the lampposts to the effect thet kerb crawlers will be watched etc. As you say Phil & Bernie the problem has presumably just moved on to other streets in the district but must still be there.

Sorry still no idea of the pub despite the clues!
