Where is This? 29

Phil

Gone, but not forgotten.
As I'm off for a few days tomoorow, a nice easy one that won't last too long. Where is this, it looks to be about mid 60's.

Bradford St looking down towards the markets

You got Bradford Street, taken from near Alcester St I think. It doesent seem that long ago that I can remember cattle being herded down that hill to the slaughter house by the drovers. Or am I just imagining that? Does anybody know when they stopped driving the cattle on the hoof to Birmingham meat market.

I know I have seen the odd cow being chased up Bradford Street on a few occasions when they have managed to escape.

It looks more like an electric milk float or bread van to me, I'm off for a few days break now, catch you later.

Looks like a BMC J2 van to me with maybe a coachbuilt body as standard vans had level roofs.

....but here's the supplementary! Who's the woman likely to get run over from one direction or another?!

That's my great great aunt, Felicity Flitwick, on her way to the Bartons Arms again, having visited a few pubs before then - selling the Sally Army paper, of course. She always walked in the middle of the 'orse road coz she could follow the tram lines home.

Just before you all move completely away from the original picture I thought you might like to see an 1816 drawing from an almost identical spot looking down Bradford Street, complete with cattle and drovers!

Bob

Bob, Thank you for posting the drawing of Bradford Street. A lot of my ancestors lived in streets in that area. Alcester St., Darwin St., Adelaide St. That's a good one for picturing how it would have looked to them.
If the original one that Phil posted had been taken a little further back, I'd have been able to see Foster Bros. where I worked.

This is from almost the same spot, facing uphill, a little earlier in 1953 still no Foster Bro's in sight.

Can I just remind the rest of you who take part what the moderators said about these postings. prior to them starting again, I quote

"I suggested that you might like to start another one up, keep it simple , one location at a time, stay within Birmingham and surrounding area and start another thread for each location to avoid the threads becoming long and boring. At this stage post in the Old & New Brum Pictures section"

Phil,

Thank you for that photograph of Bradford Street. The lower building on the left, just past the tram, that was Foster Bros. in the 1960's. I also worked at a computer company on Smallbrook Ringway, visible on your photograph of 'missing Alex's Pie Stand'.
