Astonian:
No, I didn't know the area at all really and Dad died when I was still a schoolboy. However, his elder brother, William Sheppard, ran a haulage business from 56 Sherborne Street until after the war, when he moved out of town. About five years ago, on a filthy wet day, I drove up to Birmingham determined to find the old building. Apart from the steam clock all I could see was a vast muddy building site. Braving the rain, I walked through the mud and grabbed one of the building workers to ask if I had the right place. "Too late, mate, we flattened it about three months ago to build more of these yuppy flats!" We all get disappointments in genealogy, but I think that was one of my worst - missed it by a gnat's whisker!
