Where is This? 121

Phil

Gone, but not forgotten.
Now I think this one is hard, which usually means it will go at the first attempt, but I haven't covered any of the details to give you a fighting chance. I tell you I wouldn't get this if I didn't know the answer.

Did you know Phil, that there's another picture of the same site in 1886 from a slightly different angle on p 32 of another book ?

Mike

The book that this one came from was one of The Images of England Series. Were these buidings still there when you were photographing the area? They look like they are ready to fall down on the photo.

Phil

No they weren't Phil. I think you've seen a picture of the same site then. the rooflines different. When someone's got it, i'll put it on
Mike

Bordesley Green Rd.?
Great photo Phil. I'm looking forward to finding out where it is.

Ann

Sorry folks

Not Summer Lane, not Bordesley Green Rd and not Jamaica Row. Where's Lloyd he'll know its got a tram on it.

Phil

phil..cant see any clues there..so its just wild guesses for me...mind you it usually is......as the coffee shop appears to be number 10 it indicates its taken at one or other end of the rd/street..other than that i have no idea....will take another look...

Hmm, old derelict buildings in steam tram days, so close to the old centre of town. Tram on route S, Sparkbrook, as I recall.
Bradford Street, city end??

After hours of suspense I cheated and looked in the 1890 Kellys for a Hawley at No 9 . . . no joy, but the 1892 edition gave the answer.
Moat Row, opposite the main facade of Smithfield market. The Birmingham Arms, on the corner of Bradford Street, would be just off the picture on the left.
The tram, you can see, was going to Small Heath.
I'm sure I've seen nthat picture before, but I couldn't find it today.
I think it makes a good picture anway.
Thanks very much for putting it on.

To be honest thats why I left everything on the photo, I thought the only way anybody was going to get it was by looking it up. So I don't have to tell you that you are correct.

It is of course Moat Row that I believe ran from Bradford St to Jamaica Row.

The photo was taken in the late 1880's and is from The Images of England Series Birmingham Transport. Compiled by Keith Turner.

(sorry for some reason I put the answer as Moat Lane I've corrected it to Moat Row).

I think this is the view that some of us were confusing this one with, Moat Street with a steam tram on route C (Coventry Road?)

hi astoness yes i thought it was one of the orinanal coffee house on the botton end of summer lane becausae of the old brick wall along side the coffee shop as you turn into summer lane from constution hill and the big dirty property that ajoined it and later on in years they paited the door and put it the other side of the window when they demolished the wall and built the old sally army more or less on the back of it
and later years they built the meb just along the road from it ,

hi astonian...glad you were thinking on the same lines as me...pity we were wrong..lol..actually i think that shop in summer lane is still there with a couple of buildings either side...will have a look next time i am down there and take a pic...

take care

Here's the other picture dated 1886 of almost the same scene (from images of england Central Birmingham 1870 -1920. Hawley seems to come and go in the directories, being listed in 1884, not in 1888 or 1890. but in 1892. This picture is definitely at a different time, as there is no demolished building next to the coffee house.
Also here is a picture circa 1972 which shows the buildings succeeding these. In this one Hawleys (no 9) would be the building immediately this side of Beeneys
