Where is it, Birmingham #9

that looks like a civic television shop so if anyone can recall where it was in maybe the city centre that would give us that photos location...

lyn

That Civic shop was where I got my first record player from my mother had it on HP . That was a right game too , my Mother and Father being separated , women were not normally granted HP or somesuch it required a male signature ,I eventually got it after a wait of two to three months .

So going by Mike’s ‘Civic’ list the parade must have at one point in its progress moved past 7/8 Easy Row. So were all 3 photos taken on Easy Row ? Think it would be worth finding out what the white, modern building was - must have only just been built in 1963 Viv.

All three photos are the same location - see matching dots. I think the location is the junction of Easy Row with Edmund Street. And I think the white, modern building is Trafalgar House (built 1961). So the views are of the parade making its way along Easy Row (ie the Hall of Memory would be behind the photographer). Attaching a map
(1890 - before the Hall of Memory was built) which Mikejee posted on the Paradise Street thread. I’ve marked the possible spot where I think Civic was. I think Paradise Street was between the two lampposts on the left in the middle image. This is difficult to visualise as so much has disappeared since the photos were taken - a period of massive change to this part of the city, just before the Inner Ring Road was built. Viv

If I’m correct this is roughly where the photos were taken, although even since this Streetview, the area has changed. All to the left has again been redeveloped. Trafalgar House is marked with a red dot. Viv.

I have a horrible feeling ! When I scanned these pictures about 4 years ago, did I scan them the wrong way round ?
Panic over, the Lettering is ok.

I wondered if this parade was making its way to Chamberlain/Victoria Square via Edmund Street ? Must have been in the winter or spring judging by the children wearing hats and gloves. 1963 was a severe winter, with snow on the ground for a long time. There’s no snow/ice in the photos so perhaps it was an early Spring photo. Thinking along the lines of what Spring events do we have ? Viv

And does anyone recognise the purple flag ? Looks like an institution flag of some sort, possibly with different branches (small shields). Just a guess. Viv.

There is a Fr Murphy's Hurling Club based in London:
The original idea in forming the club was for it to be a Wexford Men’s Hurling and Football Club to allow those exiled to keep in touch with their Wexford roots. It began in 1958

It looks like Father Murphy’s team was particular to London, and I can’t find any other mention associated with Birmingham. Did they come up for the day ?
If this is correct it could pin the time to March 1963.

I thought they probably came up for the parade. Not sure when the Irish Centre started but possibly a link via relations?

I wondered if it was connected to the Hurling Club as their colours are purple and gold. See below for club badge - were they behind the band and lead by their banner?

First one in #55 looks like a Fox’s Glacier Mint promotion. Or maybe it was a play on words for the Birmingham Mint ?

Think the second photo is reversed. The band is a Light Infantry band. Viv.

Think the band in the second photo of post #52 is an air cadets band. AFV = “Air Force Cadets”. Viv.

That’s better ! Here’s the spot on Colmore Row. Near the junction with Bennett’s Hill. Viv.
