When you can't find a census address

sospiri

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
If , for example, you search for "Pretoria Road" (Birmingham) on the 1911 Census, you will only get part of the road. This is because addresses such as 59a Pretoria Road have been added to the address index as "A Pretoria Road". Similarly 10 Pretoria Road Bordesley Green has been added to the address index as "Pretoria Road Bordesley Green". So entering "Pretoria Road" in the search box will omit both of these properties (and a good many more besides)!

Although both of these are obvious indexing errors, fixing them is not very high on the priority list. :(

FindMyPast.com have suggested instead that we search on *Pretoria* and leave out all references to road, street, etc. So add an asterisk before and after the root part of the street name and just add the town in the appropriate box. It seems to work OK.

Are you using FMP or 1911census.co.uk ?
I can't seem to find lots of things on FMP.
Once you have found one address you can look at the enumerators list which gives all the in the piece

Hi Mike,

I'm using FMP. Piece numbers are fine provided a street is not split over more than one piece number.
