Wheeler Baker tracing family members 1800s/1900s

hi jane could you just confirm the address and who was living there on the 1911 census for lily wheeler please

thanks

lyn

That said, she could have gone to Scotland or Ireland or anywhere on the Continent, or simply become a live-in servant with one of the country houses. Or simply changed her name if she didn't want to be found. There's also the possibility of accidental death or foul play where the identity of the deceased is unknown - much more common than you might imagine, though the the deceased in such cases are overwhelmingly men.

Maurice

jane in your first post you have not got a death date for florence....is this still the case or have you now found it

Also going back to your first post, you give Lily's dob as 20 May 1878. Did you get that from her birth certficate?

If so then there's a big coincidence in that according to the 1939 register, Charles Longord Wheeler's wife (Lily Sprigg) was also born on 20 May but one year earlier in 1877.

No, I haven’t got a birth certificate for Lily. This information came from my uncle, so a trusted source. However I was planning to recap my sources, when I find time.

at one point I thought that Charles’ wife was one and the person. But although the date of birth is similar there is no match

I thought it had an "S" for single by Charles and Lily on 1939 reg. However, I can't check as I haven't got my laptop at the moment so am working from memory.

yes jan charles and lily are both down as single on the 39 register

Jane mentions in post #53 that Lily is listed as the wife of Charles Longford Wheeler at her death, so perhaps an error maybe?

yes possibly because on the 39 charles is down as a gun worker and i think i have found him on the 1911 census born birmingham living in kent as a boarder occuption gun fitter...married

I also obtained a copy of a death cert for Lily Wheeler in 1952 and this shows her as the wife of Charles Longford Wheeler age 74 - so this would match to the DOB. The informant is stated as W E Davis, Son in Law, but I have no one with that name.

Hi, yes I did get a copy of the 1935 certificate. Unfortunately this was for a different person Lillie Wheeler and Joseph Wheeler

Hi all,
It's been a long time since I posted anything related to this ongoing search. Still been checking, but still not getting any real leads. I had hoped to find something on the 1921 census, but this was a blank. Even thought that after a potential split with the husband in 1911 / 1912 (family story) Lily may have gone to live with a family member.

However, today I took a long shot on Ancestry and viewed their immigration section. I have found a Mrs Lily Wheeler travelling from London to NSW on 1st October 1913 on the TSS Miltiades as an unassisted immigrant. Not sure how to pursue this, or even if this is my relation.

Can anyone give me some ideas to follow up on?

Thanks in advance.

There appear to be a number of Wheelers on that ship. Are they together/related?

I see the birth year is a few years out.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick response.

I could only find L Wheeler as a single female passenger listed on the 1913 date. I wondered if she decided that Birmingham, UK had nothing for her and decided to try NSW.

Hi Jane, I've only just started to look into this mystery and, reading through the details on here, I must commend all of the hard work done by yourself and others.
If the split in 1911/1912 is right would she would have been likely to keep in contact with the three girls I would have thought.
Did she make any appearance at the funeral of Doris in 1926 do you know?

Please forgive me if this has been asked before but was it possible for a husband to place his wife into a workhouse under her maiden name ?

i guess it could be possible...if you would like to give us some info ie names and dates we are happy to help you if you have hit a brick wall

Thanks for the reply Lyn, I'm not sure about the facts yet, it is a long shot suggested by friend of mine. I think it unlikely but wondered if there had been any precedent for such a thing.

ok let us know if you need any help...i was just pondering on this and just say for instance that the husband did not want to have anything more to do with his wife and she was not of sound mind to even know her name he could have had her placed in the workhouse under her maiden name...just a thought..thinking outside of the box

lyn

Yes, the thought process is based on the Sherlock Holmes line of thinking "When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth"

yes, it was possible for a husband to place his wife into a workhouse under her maiden name, though the practice wasn't the primary or easiest method of workhouse entry. A husband's marital authority meant he could legally control his wife's life, and if she was a "burden" to him, a husband could arrange for her to enter a workhouse. A husband could place his wife into a workhouse under her maiden name to avoid her being a financial burden to him.

Thank you for that Pete. If his wife was having mental health issues would it be easier / cheaper to put her into a workhouse rather than a mental hospital? If so, how do I find admissions lists online?
