At the same time as a William Henry Cox was on the Isle of Man there was a John Brotherton Cox -
William Henry Cox’s arrival from 1892/1894 until death in 1910
John Brotherton Cox there on the 1881 census back in England for the 1901 census, a jeweller and later a boarding house keeper
My William Henry Cox was a jeweller in 1877 on his marriage certificate and in 1881 and 1891 he was in the electroplating business also gilder and silversmith
The William Cox son of Thomas and Sarah was born 1833 and baptised 1834 at St Phillips simply ‘William Cox’ no middle name.
At the end of the day I am trying to confirm whether this is the family of William Henry Cox, just recently a newspaper article was found from the Isle of Man 1894 relating to an alleged assault. A Mr Charles Benjamin Whorrall his wife and daughter were also mentioned in this article as they were talking to William Henry ‘Gordon’ Cox at the time of the incident.
A son of William Henry Cox was named as ‘Gordon’.
I have traced this Charles Benjamin Whorrall as coming from England (ba Handsworth Staffordshire 1838). In 1881 and 1891 on the IOM he was living next door to a John Brotherton Cox who also came from England.
As mentioned with the help of Les and his A-Z of Birmingham the close proximity of these addresses on the censuses can be seen and it makes me wonder if they were related.
John Brotherton Cox
Born 1838 baptised 1840 a son of John Brotherton Cox and Eliza Rosbee St Phillips Birmingham
His dad John Brotherton Cox was baptised 1809 St Phillips Birmingham a son of John Cox and Sarah Brotherton. John Cox and Sarah were married at Edgbaston 1806.

Thomas Cox (b 1812) was a widower and lived with his sister, her husband and family in Alma Street Aston Manor
In 1877 John Brotherton Cox (b 1838) marries Mary Jane Allport on the IOM
1881

1891
John Brotherton Cox (b 1838) wife and children living next door to Charles Benjamin Whorrel etc
1901
John Brotherton Cox (b 1838) now living in Handsworth Staffordshire
Charles Benjamin Whorrell, wife and daughter – living Osborne Terrace IOM
William Henry Cox and ‘wife’ Alice, living in Union Mills IOM (Another newspaper article that mentioned an allegation that William Henry Cox and Alice were not married!) which in 2009 I happened to mention that I didn’t think they were as no marriage could be found)
The parents of the William Cox mentioned at the beginning of this thread born 1833 and baptised 1834 St Phillips Birmingham were a Thomas and a Sarah Cox
The parents of a Thomas Cox (baptised 1812 St Phillips Birmingham) were a William and a Patience Cox
In relation to ‘Upper’ or now just ‘Tower Street’ and Howard Street (1841 John (b 1783 ish) and Sarah Cox lived they are not a great distance apart, also Lozells Road where John Brotherton Cox (b 1809) lived in 1841. Another street that is close is Summer Lane, where Thomas Cox and Hannah Cox lived in 1840.
Addresses on the IOM were also very close to each other ie in 1881 and 1891 the Cox and Whorrell family lived next door at Loch Promenade IOM. In 1901 The Whorrall family lived at Osborne Terrace IOM and William Henry Cox and Alice lived at Union Mills IOM.
Basically, I ask can 2 men with the same surname living on the IOM who happen to both hail from Birmingham, also baptised in the same church be related to each other?
I know that Thomas Cox (b 1812) is not a brother of John Brotherton Cox (b 1809) so could they be related a generation back from that ie Thomas (b 1812) Cox’s dad William Cox and John (b 1783 ish) Cox’s dad?
An awful lot of reading, so any comments or opinions would be valued.
