Wendys key hill cem trip

I have had this request from one of the volunteers at the cemetery.:)

Would it also be possible to ask on the forum if anyone is thinning out their garden at present, or stocking up on winter plants or bulbs, and may have a couple of plants spare to donate to the Cemetery? If they bring them on the day of the walk, we can plant up some graves. They could even, 'adopt' a grave, and pop back from time to time to weed it, etc? Their own timeshare bit of Key Hill !

What a lovely idea. I still don't know for certain if I can make it but if I do I will bring some bulbs (and a trowel) and see what else I can find. Last time I was there I planted some bulbs on a grave that 'belongs' to someone else on this forum because they can't get there. It felt very rewarding - so I can recommend it.
Polly :)

I have a bucket full of english blue bell bulbs dug up out of my garden over the summer been trying to give them away this could be my chance they need to go in now.Dek

What a lovely idea, I think it is a very good and caring thing you are all doing, I wish many more people would become involved in tidying the graveyards and planting bulbs and flowers to make it a more friendly environment for relatives and friends to visit.

I am over from Ireland visiting my son and I was at Brandwood cemetery today visiting my daughters grave as it is 30 years since she died from measles and nearby there are many older graves there which are uncared for or with broken headstones.

I think that you are allowed to cultivate 18 inches in front of the headstone and in the past I have planted some bulbs but with so many trees around it attracts squirrells who dig them up.

Best Wishes to you all and I hope the weather is kind to you on that day.

Louisa

Dek they would be lovely. There are a lot of bluebells but only in certain areas. English ones are so nice it's just getting them to the cemetery.:)

Louisa I am sorry to hear you lost a daughter I can't imagine this sort of loss. Brandwood has a very good "Friends" group. The problem is unless the family allow the headstones to be repaired they can't be touched. The repairs can be expensive I was lucky as my family got involved to restore our headstone. We have some memorials at Key Hill which have been restored by people with no connection to the family buried. They are trying to help to restore the look of this beautiful place.

This is why these groups should be supported I can't believe the transformation at Key Hill. It is now a lovely place to visit.

If any members would like to come next Saturday (17th) who can't walk round the cemetery. I can get permission for some cars to park in the cemetery on this day. Just let me know.:)

Hi Polly the pub has a car park but not very big. I will probably park on Key Hill where the other entrance to the cemetery is.Then walk up Key Hill Drive there is an ally which comes out on Hylton Street opposite the pub. I can meet you there if you like.:)

Hi Wendy,
Thanks, I will park on Key Hill now that I know you can walk to the pub. Thanks for offering to meet me. Can I let you know next week as I am still not 100% sure I can make it (just 98%).
Polly :)

Can anyone tell me if there is anywhere cheap to park in Hockley, might bring mom along with us but obviously she can't walk far so need to bring wheelchair for her, thanks :)

Claire you may be able to park in the Jewelers Arms car park. It's at the rear of the pub. Then you can drive to Key Hill and I will get permission for you to park in the cemetery.:)

Thanks Wendy, that would be great, mom can oly do little bits of walking, so it will be easier to park as close to places as possible :)

This post is for people who need to park in the cemetery on Saturday. Enter the cemetery at the Key Hill entrance through the gates. You will need to follow the main path from Key Hill down the slope, bear right parallel to Icknield St, and turn left at the end to park by the Island which was the site of the former chapel. Don't worry if you can't make the tour there are benches to sit on and enjoy the wonderful atmosphere. There will be some helpers there on the day. If you have any needs or questions about the tour please ask.:):)

Wendy, have managed to convince mom she won't be a burden and slow everyone down, so we'll need that parking in the cemetary, thank you :)

No problem ClaireI told Brian he said it would be no problem at all, I use to push my Mom all over the place. Your Mom is more than welcome.:)
