A photo of a key junction in Handsworth. Today this junction has a number of signposts but even at the time of the photo it was necessary to erect a white signpost at this point to assist travellers. Taking the left-hand turn into Handsworth Wood Road would lead you to Handsworth Wood and Hamstead whilst straight ahead along Wellington Road was the direction of Perry Barr and Witton. The photographer would have been standing with Church Lane behind him, leading eventually to Winson Green. The children would have been standing roughly in the position of the modern traffic roundabout. The houses in view either side of Wellington Road are still visible today. The walls on the perimeter of the right-hand house have been lowered. Viv.

We have two threads for Wellington Road, Handsworth, and the other has unfortunately lost its pictures.

In 1959 the Birmingham and Warwickshire Archaeological Society reports that fragments of a Romano-british kiln were found in the garden of 224 Wellington Road.

The present street view shows this address on part of a new development. (On the right of the picture) Am I right in thinking that at one time there was a small garden centre there?

I actually remember that garden center for a very different reason.

Hirons were at 212 Wellington Road and advertising plants available from at least 1960. (Remember how plant suppliers were always 'Nurseries', not 'Garden Centres'). In the 1970s they were offering gardening gift tokens. They also had premises in Slade Road, Erdington.

A few adverts and an extract from the Ghost Signs thread.
