hi folks..ive been sent this cracking pic but i wonder if anyone can recall exactly where on the birchfield road it was taken...

Hi Lyn,
That looks like the place where I bought my 1st car, a Hillman Imp. I think it was on the corner of Aldridge Rd and Wellhead Lane. I'll have to look through the 'My 1st Car Thread' to be sure

in 1969 there is a Jack allen (Motor bodies) on Aldridge Road, just off birchfiel road on the south side between franchse st and wellhead road .

The oldmaps site seems to be down at present. so i can onl give you hte 1904 view, but that does show Wellhead farm (in blue), which must be the old farm in the picture.

This is, I think, the photo posted by Lyn in post #1. I think this is the rear of farmhouse - the lampost to the right being on Aldridge Road.

There are two other views showing, I think part of the farm, to be occupied by Jack Allen Motors in the 1960s/1970s.

An aeriel view of the farm (Britain from Above) in the 1950s. The farmhouse was near the junction of Aldridge Road and Wellhead Lane. I think the entrance to the farm was to the left of the photo, indicated on the aeriel view with a red dot.

The late Oldmohawk posted this aeriel view of demolition in Perry Barr in the late 1960s/early 70s. It shows Wellhead Farm (blue dot) no longer a working farm. Only the farmhouse remains and in use for other purposes. It clearly shows an entrance to the premises from Wellhead Lane (red dot). For reference, to the left is Alexander Stadium (the original stadium)

Maybe someone could look up "George.... Coal merchant" on Wellhead Lane or Aldridge Road please. The gate has a sign in the second photo.

That's great, thanks Brummie-lad. Your map also makes it clear that the buildings in that photo are farm out-buildings, not the farmhouse. On that corner of Aldridge Road and Wellhead Lane the farm buildings were demolished before the farmhouse, probably early 1960s.

Reading posts on other threads, it looks like the building was being used by Buntings Motors from at least the 1940s to the around the 1960s.

I remember the building when it was a garage but I didn't know that it had been part of a farm originally.

Buntings was an Austin agent when I worked at Beeches Garage in the early sixties, my boss John Maybury fell out with BMC at the time and turned to Toyota, BMC then awarded Buntings the agency but not long after Buntings closed altogether.

My Dad worked at Buntings for his first job, from about 1962 until it closed. His Dad was good friends with mr. Bunting (I think his name was Norman) and was allowed to ride his Triumph Terrier around the yard on Saturdays until he was old enough to go on the road.

I must have been in a dream when I wrote that I worked at Brooklyn Garage not Beeches Garage.
