Thank you Maurice. I am actually trying to find my Watton family in the 1871 census. I thought I would have success if I sent for the death certificate of one of their sons who died age 4 in 1872. He was George Alfred Watton and his parents were Edwin and Eliza Watton. George Alfred Watton’s death certificate showed that, in 1872, the family lived at #2 Court, Lennox Street. Unfortunately, this Information hasn’t helped me find them in the 1871 census. I became excited when I found an Edwin Watton in the 1871 census who was born in 1864. This would fit MY Watton family information but it wasn’t the correct family. I would love any kind of help with this brick wall.

Correction. Edwin and Eliza Watton’s other son was Edwin Francis Watton born 1869 NOT 1864. Their son born in 1864 was William Thomas Watton.

I can only see three Edwin Wattons showing in the whole of England & Wales on FindMyPast, two in the same large family in Dilwyn Place, Birmingham, and the third in Feckenham, Alcester - and that is without adding a location or any birth dates. None of these entries appear to tie in with the dates you have given. Where are they in 1881?

Maurice, in 1881, the Watton family were living at 47 Bk Guildford St. It states ”Tripe Shop”;under the address. Edwin Watton (b1839) Eliza (b 1847) children William1863, Edwin 1868, then Rose, Frank, Arthur, and Lilly had been added to their family. I have traced the family through all the censuses as well as parish records but they are nowhere to be found in the 1871 census. I have tried various spellings as their last name is often misspelled but no success so far. Thank you for your help.

Kellys Directory for 1882 (which probably refers to 1881, gives no 47 Guildford St as Frederick Watton, Fried fish shop. The shop would have been the front of 47, with family living in the back. By the time of the 1883 edition the shop has gone

I have received both the birth and death certificate for Eliza Ann Watton. You are correct that the famiky were living elsewhere when she was born In 1871. They were living at 18 Court, Summer Lane. Sadly, both she and her brother George died of scarletina a few days apart at the Children’s Hospital. As you know, I am still looking for the family in the 1871 census and would love any help you can give me With this new address. Many thanks, Pat

Hi Macdog. We share the same roots. Edwin Francis Watton's (1869) parents were Edwin Francis Watton (1839) and Eliza Bowen; his parents were Edwin Watton (1819) and Eliza Cox. This Edwin's sister Elizabeth and her husband Joseph Langman are my 2nd GG parents, so our MCRA would be his parents, Jeremiah Watton (1795) and Mary Ann Brown, my 3rd GG parents.
