Waterloo Street Birmingham

Some new detailed exterior pics of the Midland Bank now Cosy Club on Waterloo Street / Bennetts Hill.

Seen with the Lost & Found (ex National Provincial Bank).

Forward coat of arms above the door. Also spotted BBC.

Built in 1830, so assume that means Birmingham Borough Council (not British Broadcasting Corporation as they didn't exist back then!).

No snow here in Birmingham, today just winter sunshine and a blue sky!

Philpotts Sandwiches corner of Waterloo Street and Bennetts Hill.

Pevsner description
The NE corner is the former Parr's Bank of 1904 by Cossins, Peacock & Bewlay. Originally three storeys, the upper ones unfortunate later additions.

Cavendish House

Pevsner
Cavendish House of 1937-9 by W.T. Orton with T. Cecil Howitt as consultant. A thirteen-bay moderne block, the seven-bay centre projecting slightly in a frame, with reeded pilasters. Howitt's involvement explains its impressive urban scale.

Pleased that the city escaped snow. I did in South Devon but North, East and MId Devon is another story as are parts of Cornwall. It seems the south and SE has received a dump of snow now.
However, today is Candlemas Day (Groundhog Day in the USA), which being bright and sunny means more winter to come.
This is an old English Song:
If Candlemas be fair and bright,
Come winter, have another flight;
If Candlemas bring clouds and rain,
Go winter, and come not again.

However, in the USA they are probably very happy especially in the Mid-West, as Punxsutawney Phil did not cast his shadow heralding an early Spring there.

The view in Waterloo Street today. Looking towards the Town Hall. Alpha Tower on the left. HSBC UK - 1 Centenary Square on the right. And can you see the Hyatt Regency?

Close by is Christchurch House and Wellington House.

The view was seen from near the former Midland Bank (now the Cosy Club).

Well, something seems to not be correct so far. We are in warmish pleasant, but windy weather, and the North of the USA is getting yet more snow!

Don't speak too soon, Alan! :-) Here in north east Crete we're had quite a bit of rain, thunderstorms lasting several hours and much wind, but just a sprinkling of snow on the mountaintops, which has now gone. But now forecasting heavy rain from late Saturday until at least late Tuesday. Sounds like another long weekend indoors! But that only takes up until 26 February, so plenty of time for more horrible weather yet! :-) :-) :-)

The view from Waterloo Street towards Arena Central and the Alpha Tower. An ever changing view over Victoria Square with the Dandara building and 3 Arena Central. You can just about see the Town Hall of the right. Christchurch Passage (not in the photo to the left) was closed due to roadworks in Victoria Square.

Just wondered if anyone had any information or photos from 1940 for Jack Cottons letting agents at 35 Waterloo street. My mum started working there when she was 14 and had just left school.

Major changes were underway when this photo was taken in 1970. The whole of Galloways Corner was under demolition (left), hence the crane and temporary fencing visible in the photo. Just 3 years later, Alpha Tower would dominate the view (1973), just beyond the Town Hall
