WasDoes the church keep burial records ?

Hi,

I have a mass card stating that my relative ( william Garraty - www.freewebs.com/billygarraty ) was buried in St Saviour's cemetry, Saltley around the 1930's.

Having had no luck in personally locating the headstone as the cemetry wasat the time completely overgrown, I was advised by the vicar to check the headstone records at the Birmingham Library - which I did, again without any success as a number of graves are listed as unknown. I must be honest, I expected that someone who had was at the time pretty well known, would have at least had a headstone.

My question is simply that surely the church mut have a book that logs Burials as is the case with Marriages etc as far as I know?

Thanking you in advance.

Rgds - JB

Hello and welcome jb007uk.

It is always difficult to locate a burial place. Cemeteries seem to be easier than church yards although all burials are recorded some churches did not hand over registers for transcription. Did you ask at the library if they held the registers for St Saviours as these registers usually have a grave number and burial plot. I know St Saviours Church and as you say its very overgrown. I have a friend who has done some reaserch I will contact him and see if he can help. There may have been a headstone at one time but they were often vandalised and then removed. I will try and help although Birmingham Library records are closed for January.

Icarus, Great minds, Dave is the friend I was about to contact. I will anyway.

Re : Thanks

Many thanks for both your help is greatly appreciated.

I have have found the mass cards and stupidly did not notice that William was buried with his Father Francis in the family grave along with possibly others - not on his own. This may put a different slant on things.

Re: Was Does the church keep burial records ?

Hi,

Just to update youall on this thread.

I visited St Saviours one Sunday morning sometine in the summer and after mass spoke with the Vicar who told me that the reason that I could not find my relatives graves is because the Germans blew a large part of the graveyard up during the second world war. I am putting any further info on my website www.billygarraty.com

Kind regards - Joe Burke
