Warstone Lane

Re: warston lane,

It's a lovely day for it Irene I wish I could join you but have to work today :(

Re: warston lane,

Just got back from WL - Spent a couple of hours there yesterday in the sun, filling 6 large builders bags with ivy from the catacombs - now cleared up everything on the ground - just a bit still hanging on the walls!
Today - burnt off all six bags, plus wood from the old 'compost' heap - and a Bag and half of frshly cut branches/sapling c/o the lovely Floyds girls and their helper!

Great day to be pottering about gardening!

Re: warston lane,

Well done Brian - you work so hard to keep the cemeteries looking neat and tidy and safe for people to visit. Also well done to Pam, Irene and friend.
I am hoping to get there soon to do a bit of tidying up - I know that every little bit of help can make a big difference.

Re: warston lane,

Re: warston lane,

WL_O_810_Allen_Preston___Captain_Bustle_.JPG Spotted in Warstone Lane Cemetery just uphill of the entrance to the catacombs, alongside the main path - 1 Man & his Dog !
Allen Taylor of Waterloo St, and his faithful dog "Captain Bustle", who appears to have pined for 3 months before joining his Master.

Re: warston lane,

WL__979_Maidment_Grave.JPG WL__979_Close_up_of_Christ_with_crown_of_thorns.JPG Warstone Lane - just uphill of Allen Taylor & Captain Bustle is this outstanding memorial showing Christ with his Crown of Thorns. In memory of Jessie Maria Maidment.

Re: warston lane,

Brian, does the memorial of the man and his dog (post #36) say Allen Preston not Taylor - or am I reading the wrong bit?

Can anyone find anything out about this person?
Also - have we got two Warstone lane threads going now?

Re: warston lane,

Well spotted Pollypops - I scribbled so many titbits down on my notebook - I got them jumbled up when i labelled the pics!

This was the 'current' Warstone Lane thread - as far as I could see - but than again - what do I know?????

Brian

Re: warston lane,

Hi Pollypops

From what I can see after a quick look,
Allen Preston can be followed through the census from 1841 to 1861 at 5 Waterloo Street. He was born in about 1798. The 1851 census says he was born in Rotherhithe (the 1861 says Greenwich I think ). His wife was Anne Collin (or Collier according to Family Search.org) Preston nee Taylor. They married in Buckinghamshire in 1826. Allen was widowed by 1861. I do not know if he had any children because none are showing on the census. He did have nieces living with him though by the name of Long. He was a Law Stationer and in 1851 he employed 17 Clerks. (16 in 1861)

Re: warston lane,

Lindyloo
Is that the same Allen Preston though?. I read the inscription as he having died either 183X or 185X. In either case he couldn't have been in 1861 census - or maybe i'm reading it wrong. The allen Preston you mention i slsied in directories at 5 Waterloo St as a law stationer in 1858 till at least 1862 . In 1858 he is listed as living at 47 Monument lane. This could, of course, be the son of the person on the headstone
Mike

Re: warston lane,

Hi Mike, I think it is right, all the records I've found seem to fit and the date on the headstone I think is 1874 which fits with a burial record on FMP for Allen Preston, buried 1875, Reg no.18284, Warstone, 3 in grave and on Free BMD's site, died Birmingham Dec 1874, age 77.
He is still at 5 Waterloo in 1871 aged 73..but of course I could be wrong.

EDIT He is also listed in Kelly's of Birmingham 1868 in Waterloo Street.

EDIT 2. Also found his Probate record..
1875, 20th January, Effects under £5,000....re-sworn June 1876, under £7,000
The will of Allen Preston, late of 5 Waterloo Street in the County of Warwickshire, Law Stationer, who died 28 Dec 1874 at 5 Waterloo Street, was proved by Elizabeth Man Long and Mary Collier Long, both of 5 Waterloo Street, Spinsters the Executrixes

Re: warston lane,

Hi Lindyloo
Must be him then. The headstone has worn badly just at the relevent point

Re: warston lane,

Morning Mike,:encouragement:
Perhaps someone else will take a look and check my findings.

Re: warston lane,

Great research everyone - he died in 1874, December 28th, and poor captain Bustle lingered on until March 8th 1875.
Headstone is worn - had to wet it to take a pic.

No mention of the dog in the will than?

Brian

Re: warston lane,

Many thanks to Lindyloo and Mikejee for the information. I will get this typed up and put in the Warstone Lane folder (which is in the pen room) with a picture of the headstone.
What was/is a Law Stationer?

Re: warston lane,

Hi Polly
A person who sells Legal Stationary - wills, documents, special forms for house buying/selling, etc and all their other jargonised paperwork
Quite big business - even today!

Brian

Re: warston lane,

Cheers Irene, will pop in as I'm passing tonight to have a look and take a pic - may be 7pm, may be 11pm (again!).

I've taken the bonfire bin round to KH (Sunday), and popped in today and filled 2 big builders bags with branches - and that was from just 1 Section!

many thanks for all the help you are giving in WL.

Brian

Re: warston lane,

Hi Brian. You work so hard.We filled 1 big builders bag and drag's some branches up to where you have the bonfire. We cut quiet a few branches up which we bagged and took with us.Also we took 2 bag's of log's with us.We will carry on giveing all the help we can.Irene

Hi Irene, sounds like you all worked pretty hard yourselves! I didn't stop to check the 'compost area' but here is the fragment you found

SAM_4164.JPG It is a fragment of a headstone that was broken somehow and replaced. Took some finding - but here is the replacement

SAM_4166.JPG It is Private Harold Eaton, 10th Royal Warwicks, who died 14th May 1918, aged 32, of wounds received on avtive service.

Re: warston lane,

SAM_4167.JPG SAM_4169.JPG SAM_4170.JPG The side rails show Harold himself on one side, and his parents (presumably) on the other. It does not show Frederick who died in 1923 on there. Possibly eldest son? Harold's father died before his Harold, and his Mother soldiered on, losing her husband, her sons Harold & Frederick, before passing away herself.

Can someone just check that they are parents & sons? Presumably Harold was invalided back homeso is buried here.

Gone but not forgotten.

Well done Brian - great detective work.
Also well done to Irene, Pam, Nephew Darren and Cousin Brian for all their hard work in Warstone Lane!

Hi Brian,
After a quick look..there was a Frederick and Eliza at 151 Hockley Hill in 1901 with sons Edward, Arthur, Harry, Howard and Harold and daughter Beatrice. Fred was a Confectioner. Later they were to be found at 65 Villa Street, Aston Manor and Fred was a Beerhouse Keeper.
Not sure about the Fred who died 1923, will look again later

Cheers Lindyloo.
I assume the CWG Headstone was damaged in the past and has been replaced. The bits were obviously chucked out all over the place.
The material, colour and style made it a CWG Headstone, but he wasn't listed on the War Memorial, so it was a question of walking about looking at them all - Good job I called in on my way out at 7pm rather than on my way back at 11pm!

Brian

That is brilliant Brian you alway's find time to work things out i find it so interesting.Keep up the good work we all appreciate it.Irene.

I'll pop ion on Sat and place it on the right grave now I've found it - it's right near to Pitsford St, so not so far away from it's home.
