Wagon and horses Sheldon

Hi Westwitch, Only to happy to help :) and pleased that you have found photos that are of interest to you...The photo's and memories that are posted on the site are a constant source of amazement to me and they are posted by folk that are a lot more knowledgeable about Birmingham than I am.. I just love to research things and help when I can, it's my way of giving a little something back for all the help that has been given to me since I joined.

Mike, I'm really pleased you found Leonard in the later years for Westwitch, that pretty much has his lifetime covered work and location wise.
Can you help with another small query please ?
I was asked where The White Hart, Main Street was, as mentioned in the National Probate Calendar. I found Main St between Stratford Road and Kyrwicks Lane and assumed from the map that the Public House on the corner of Main Street and Kyrwicks was The White Hart, but the info you have from the Electoral Rolls gives Spark Street, which I am sure you know runs off Main Street. So would the pub have been on the corner of Main Street and Spark Street or somewhere along Spark St? I have seen corner plot on the maps which could be the pub but it isnt marked as such.

Looking at the electoral rolls and Kellys together with the maps, i am sure that no 13 is on the corner , as marked in red

Thanks Mike :) I tried to work it out, but it is difficult indeed. The 1900 kelly's make it confusing for me because it lists 6 after Montpellier Place then 11, 13, 14, and 23 which kind of looks as if 13 is in the middle but later kellys only lists 6, 11 and 13 which makes it look like its the corner !!! plus the fact that the amount of buildings don't seem to match with the numbers. You must have the patience of a saint, sitting and working out all the number locations that you do for people.:adoration:

Have just realised on post 32 I put 16 spark St. This was my fingers going a bit dool-ally and should have been 13 spark st .Post 20 clearly stated white Hart was 13 spark St and this is the building in red . Have now corrected this on post 32

Mike

You have got the right location as I remember the pub, not that I ever used it, but I think it was demolished in the early 70's and replaced by new housing. My uncle moved into one of them from Larches Street when it was demolished.

Hello David,
With regard to your research into the Wagon & Horses Pub and the thread started on 10/04/12.
My Great Grandfather, a William Luckman, was Licensee in 1880 and I have a photograph of him standing outside the Pub. It is a little faded but still shows a lot of detail,it looks like a very rustic country watering hole. The second photograph shows the Wagon & Horses in the 1920's , a lot more spruced up although I am not sure who the Licensee was at that time.
If you would like copies of them then let me have your address, never had much success in posting photograph's onto a thread.
Best wishes, Mike Bond.

Hi, The Cock Inn was further up the Coventry Rd in between the Excelsior Hotel and Elmdon farm (which is still there) when the road was single lane
