shaygriff

proper brummie kid
In 1839, my ancestor Dennis Vowles was transported to Australia leaving three children, Joseph (born abt.1827), Elizabeth (born abt. 1830) and Dennis (born.abt 1833 in Birmingham). I have found Joseph living with relations The Lathams in 1841, could Elizabeth and Dennis been in the workhouse.
Anyone to help me?

ive found a criminal record for dennis vowles but the trial was 30 jul 1836 and dennis got 12 months imprisonment for house breaking. cant see the transportation.

I found the housebraking one as well. Here's what I found about the transportation:
According to "Australian Convict Index, 1788-1868 there is an entry for a Dennis Vowles who was convicted on 27.3.1839 in Warwickshire and sentenced to 10yrs imprisonment. He was sent as a convict to New South Wales Australia on 10.10.1839 aboard the vessel Woodbridge
occ. cabinetmaker. widower with 3 children 2 male and 1 female..It say's born in Worcestershire but I can't find any Vowles' born there that period. We do know that he lived in Worcester ST. at the time though.

The Australia Lists of Convicts with Particulars shows his crime was 'Stealing a Plated Cup'.

Perhaps because he was newly widowed and in dire straits his crimes began. His 1st crime was 1836 - I would guess that between 1835 and 1836 his wife Sarah died, burial index shows Selina Vowels 18 mos. was bur. 5/8/1836 St. Mary Whittall ST, Birmingham hence leaving him with 2 sons and 1 daughter. Can't find Sarah's burial though.

On the subject of Transportation. My Great-Great Grandfather Henry Cadman b 1813 was given a term of 10 years in Australia for stealing 2
sides of bacon and he died there. He left a son Thomas that I have his records, but his wife Mary(nee Wooton)b 1815?.I have no trace.
What happened to her,did she enter a workhouse?
