Although this pub has featured in other threads, I don't think it has a unique section - sorry if this is not the case. Anyway, I am having a little look into this place to add to my Villa Street section. I came across this and thought I would share it as I suspect it will float Lyn's boat. Not great quality I'm afraid but it was featured in the Birmingham Daily Gazette in January 1938.

This is the complete list of post-1939 licensees for this house. If anybody has any information on them or knowledge of them that would be great. Please note however that anything you add here I would want to add to my webpage. Blimey, that sounds a bit like "anything you do say may be given in evidence!!"

1939 - 1952 Ernest Thomas Dickinson
1952 - 1954 Josiah George Herbert Barnes
1954 - 1955 Arthur Edward Hatton
1955 - 1958 John Samuel Baker
1958 - 1958 Lilian Baker
1958 - 1960 Stanley Douglas Cope

I have another photograph of the place but it doesn't show much that the other one does. I need to dig it out for my webpage. The pub closed on February 23rd 1960 but I don't know how long the building survived after this date. Yes, Holder's had it first but both Atkinson's and M&B also.

thanks kieron i always thought it closed round about 1960 i would have been 7 then which explains why i do not recall it

If I remember correctly my pic has a lantern and does not have the factory next door but has housing. Your pic shows what must have been the brewery attached to the pub [on the left].

i would like to see that one please kieron the factory was southalls and was certainly there pre ww2 as someone was killed there during the bombings

map here showing a few numbers of interest to me including the villa tavern..the vine and my house in purple no 118

wonderful info as usual kieron..its always like reading a book...i guessed that the villa tavern must have closed early 60s as i do not remember it but as i have just read it closed in 1960 so i would only have been 7 years old...thanks also for the refs to the queens head corner of hunters vale/farm st...very interesting as that pub also has a family link

lyn:)

posting a cracking photo for new member knightstorm (steve) (whos grandparents ran the villa tavern) their names were catherine and joseph willis...steve has also sent me another photo of his grandparents...the pub was demolished in 1960

if our pub expert keiron sees this post maybe he could check on the exact date joseph was the landlord as their names are not on his list given on post 35 unless of course they were there before 1939...thanks for sharing steve a great addition to this thread...if its ok with you i will try and get those creases taken out of the photos

Thank you Lyn, this is really great. We would love to hear any feedback that this group would have to offer in regard to our family's history.

hi steve one of our members jukebox kindly took out the creases in this photo for you...the one of your nan outside the pub is a little more difficult but it should be done by tomorrow...you are quite welcome to save this in case you want to print it off..

the reason for the delay in the other photo is because jukebox forgot to put your nans feet back on :D but as said it should be done for tomorrow

lyn

here you go steve..our member jukebox has worked his magic again...amazing when you look at the bad condition of your original...he has done a black and white and sepia..and your nan now has her feet back lol...dont worry about saving the photos you wont get the snowflakes as well :D

Wow those photos are brilliant. Thank you Jukebox so much. You have turned those old creased stained photos into works of art. It is my Nan's Birthday today!!!! She would have been 111 years old! Thank you again!

You can add Joseph Willis to the list now!

But any idea of a date?

I also have
1908 Edward Glover
1915 Albt. Edward Hill
1930 Saml. Aubrey Deakin
hi rob this is the problem...we cant find joseph willis listed in the available electoral rolls and i have just emailed kieron at west midlands pubs to see if he can help with a year...its possible joseph was only there for a short time..below are the available e rolls on line

Hi guys,

Judging by the approximate age of my Nan, (i would say mid-twenties), I would estimate the photo somewhere between 1935 and 1939. Unfortunately, we didn't even know the name of the pub until I posted on Memories of Birmingham facebook group last week, where it was identified by the son (Ray Cope) of the last Licencees (Stanley). Then Lyn had determined that they had moved to Great Francis Street by the 1939 pre-war register. Anyway, I really appreciate everyones efforts here to clear this hole in our family's history.

Yes, Joseph Willis can be added to the list but not this list as the post-1939 list I typed up is complete. I estimate mid-late 1930s but the licence register for that period was, I am told by the magistrate's clerk, destroyed. Is it OK to use your pic - unlike the wild west of FB I always ask for permission and credit accordingly. Cheers, Kieron

Hi Keiron,

Haha @fb, no problem.

I have spoken with my brother and we are more than happy for you to use the pic, and to contribute to this very worthwhile knowledge bank! When I search the Villa Tavern, there only 2 images that keep coming up. This one has a human touch we would feel is a valuable contribution to your archive.

All the best

Steve

Kierans Midlands Pubs link in post #41 doesn't seem to be working for me. Is there a problem ? Perhaps we need to update it.

By the way, if you look at this image from one of your other threads, it is marked 1933. If you notice in the window, it has the white letters I and L missing from Billiard. But if you look at the one with my Nan in it, it has the B I L L missing. So Nan's photo would have to be after 1933, which we have pretty much established anyway
