oh my ive got goose bumbs
i used to live on this road back in the 70's
the view is one i remember very well as the shool and there houses didnt change much

the wall and railings to the right belong to handsworth secondry mondern as it was know then its now apartments.

the shop you can see at the top of the road was a green groucers and was owned by an irish family who had six strapping sons who always helped my mom with her shopping home its now a chinese supermarket

the shop with the BP sign outside i think that was a small garage come hardwearshop its now a recovery place.

if you followed the road all the way up you would come to winson green prison with its castle like frontage its changed a lot since then

i lived on the handsworth new road between markby road and willis road

thankyou so much astoness for posting this it has given me a warm fuzzy feeling
 
hello celia i am so happy that the pic gives you a warm fuzzy feeling lol this i one reason why i post these old pics to bring back happy memories to you all and will continue to do so so long as members want them...not long woke up but after another cuppa i will be posting the next batch on the old street pics thread..

For the umpteenth time I think what a shame it is that my late Dad can't see this forum.
Between the wars he played football for a team called "Handsworth Old Boys" and I like to picture him as a kid, walking to the school in the picture from Norman St, Winson Green.
 
Great pics again Lyn, thank you. Can't believe how old fashioned the cars etc look in 1960. It doesn't seem that long ago to me. With all the streets you have put on here Lyn, there haven't been many with the an attic. The back to back I lived was three stories high. Perhaps there weren't as many houses with attics as I thought there were.
 
Maggs you must have read my mind, I really can't recall the cars looking that old nor the streets so uncluttered, even in the late 60s/70's which were my era.

Yes Sue, it's amazing how the mind plays tricks with the memory isn't it? I remember the street I lived in, a car never came down it. Oh such peaceful times. Very different now, there is a car a minute going by where we live.

Hi, I've copied this picture from a "brummie" facebook site. It has been decided that the building in the background could be at the top of the Bull Ring "Waterstones"? So my question what road is the foreground, could it be Phillips St. or Worcester St. Could someone (Mikejee perhaps!) please do a lookup on the location of the shops. 1960ish pre Rotunda.
 
It's on New Street/Worcester Street junction. Here is another pic of it. I had a 'milk shake' in there once ..:)

oldMohawk, that's a great picture. I am always on the lookout for those showing Worcester Street. My first reaction was 'what's the building at the back?' I'm sure someone will come up with the answer.
You post made me think about milkshakes. Although I remember them being on sale in various places I didn't actually have one until I took my children to MacDonald's. What an admission! Their milkshakes were so thick that it hurt my nose to suck them up.
 
Hi Lady P, the one and only time I went in that Milk Bar was when we had arrived on the sleeper train from Glasgow and were waiting for the buses to start so went in for a milk shake and a fight broke out in there so we quickly left. The building in the background is the one next to the Times Furnishing (I think) but I can't remember what it was at the moment. There is a pic of Worcester St click/here looking a little battered !

Lady P you are not supposed to inhale milkshakes through the nose ( that's only for recreational medication!).

oldMohawk, I think the Cottage Hospital is still there - at least it was quite recently. It's no longer a hospital as such but I believe it provides other services like physiotherapy and diabetic advice.

You're right Lady P, I've just had a look in street view, it might even be NHS.

Sutton Coldfield just up and over the road from what used to be The Cup, in fact the building just past the one with all the sign hanging is The Cup
