V E day party celebrations

Great picture John, taken from an unusual angle. O0 I'm really surprised it's in colour as colour film must have been rare at the time, particularly with the shortages after the war.

Me to Oisin when I opened the package i was taken by suprise with the colours as I thought they would be monochrome I think the photographs are smashing "BUT" why do we have to pay to see the likes of these old photographs they should be in the public domain it's only through the VE celebrations they have come to light, how many more are there locked away from the public view, it's all down to money making yet how many times would they be called on to supply them ? never mind we have least had few to look at  :knuppel2:

What a great picture John., I wonder how many pictures are in attics in old boxes, waiting to be discovered. It reminds me a little of a Lowry painting

Hit it on the nose, Connie Cassie Gracie. It's all the different movements of the figures. The more you look at it the more action you can see. Thanks John. O0

Hello Ossie,
Isn't it a great picture.  The line of young women with their arms around each other, the child pulling his father along, the woman in a turban leaning against the wall, the two little children on the left just watching, the woman reaching out her hand to maybe the woman in green coming into the picture.  Is that a piano that's been wheeled out in front of the window next to  the woman in a turban, I'm not sure.  You're right [and you won't hear that often] the more you look, the more you see.

yes Grace it is a piano an upright or as it was called an old joanna we used to have one in Parliament street they would just drag it out and start playing no HI Pods or casssettes then the piano was the only musical instrument that seemed to be around we had the usual knees up songs like Roll out the Barrrel , it's a long way to Tipperary and many more such like can you add to the knees up ones, the most popular serious one was the Rose Of Tralee I still like to hear these now I bet Rod will find them from some where
let's see what you can come up with

What a lovely photograph and how nice to recall how friends and nieghbours gathered to have fun.

Even nicer to see the children dressed as children and being ALLOWED to BE children running around with happy faces. Sadly, so different from todays little ones.

Thank you John for posting it. :)

Those covers on the cellar-heads interest me. I don't recall seeing anything like that in my home patch of Winson Green. As they look new, could they be something to do with bomb protection in houses where the cellars were used as shelters?

they are for blast protection and falling debris they are only on houses that have had the cellars strengthened we had one at number 19 Parliament street the house belongd to Mr Tustin the APR warden mind you a direct hit would have collapsed the house on top of the cellar.
there were lots of them around my wifes nan had one at Abbey street Winson Green I am sure we have some think about them on the home front section

l remember the brick cellar covers well John, further down Parliment Street,Danny Bowens house had one,we had an anderson shelter in our back garden, sounds as if we had a front garden,l did'nt know anyone in Aston who had one of them, those brick cellar covers could be lethal in the blackout if you did'nt have a torch, many a person was injured walking into the darn thing, but they were great to play in like hide and seek etc, happy days not realising the true seriousness of war. Brenda

Hope I have posted this in the right place ?
