From Absent voter’s records 1918 I’ve found my granddad Pte 47917 W R B Mon Reg,

First am I right that means Private 47917 serving in the Warwickshire Royal Brigade Monmouthshire Regiment. Granddad was born in Ross and moved to Birmingham between 1915 – 1917.

Did a search and unsure if it was a TA regiment or what the regiment was, any help please.

Ray

Thanks Alf,

Unsure if this is significant; although granddad was born in Ross he married Nan in Abergavenny (Monmouthshire) in 1914.

You did not give your grandfather's name. Checking the Medal Index Cards on Ancestry I found a George king, Would this be him ? If so then I have attached his MIC. As you can see Monmouthshire Regt and Kings Shropshire light Infantry.

Terry, thank you.

Yes it was George King – 1 Weston Place (1/177 Guildford Street) Lozells.

I have attempted to understand the Medal Index Cards at
https://www.1914-1918.net/grandad/grandad6.htm

However could you enlighten please:

Is the number under 47917 the King Shropsgire Light Infantry number – 299 ?? (can you see that clearer)

I’m trying to work out if granddad served overseas, if so where and any medals etc. thus if possible could you also clarify numbers in the medal roll and page number

I didn’t think he had served overseas due to age of children, but it seems I could well be wrong

First child born 23rd February 1915, Abergavenny
Second 20th July 1917, Aston, Birmingham
Third Birth: 5th August 1921 Aston Birmingham

Thanks

Alf, thanks

I live and learn and aim to keep learning for a long time - better eyesight may help me there :)

Is there anyway of knowing if granddad joined whilst in Abergavenny (circa 1914 – 1916) or whilst in Birmingham (circa 1917 on)?

Hi Ray

He did serve in a theatre of war otherwise he would not have received two medals. They are the British War medal and the Victory medal. Having these two indicates that he went overseas after the 1 January 1916. When and how long for or if he saw action... I doubt we will ever know now. Most service records were destroyed in WW2 bombing and those that survive are usually for pension details if the soldier was wounded.

Regards

Terry

Hi Terry,

Thanks for your help. I will endeavour to find out somehow the exact date when granddad and gran came to B’ham. Their marriage date of June 1914 could well be significant due to the war.

Thanks again
