TV Appearances

Old Boy

master brummie
Hi All,

I have enjoyed the TV series "The History of Game Shows" featuring our dear Wendy and look forward to the fourth episode on Sunday. It reminded me of my few TV appearances. First was a game show produced in Glasgow and shown at teatime on Sundays. For the life of me I cannot remember the name of it or that of the presenter who was a well known Scottish comedian. It was a type of word game Out of 4 contestants I was the third to be eliminated and came home with £50 and a set of Edinburgh Crystal of which only the decanter remains. The winner, a lady, won £500 and a holiday in Switzerland.

Later I appeared in 15 to 1 but failed miserably being the first to be eliminated. The debacle put me off appearing in game shows ever again. However the winner on that ocasion was a nurse from Northfield so the honour of Birmingham was vindicated.

Finally I appeared in Question Time at Pebble Mill and put a question. I forget what I asked but remember hurrying home so that I would see myself on TV.

My wife and I also attended a Songs of Praise at St Pauls Church in Birmingham but the cameras never picked us out.

What appearances have you made? Come on. Do not be shy.

I never made the tele, but i had my photo displayed in the post office.

I'm going to regret this, but I was a front-line guest in an episode of the BBC daytime show "Kilroy" some twenty years ago.

You'll all have to wait until I get a flight all the way from Wolverhampton to one of the Christmas meet-ups, and only wild horses (or serious amounts of Teacher's whisky) will persuade me to show the video.

I might give a clue later in the week depending on how pub night has gone lol.

Hi Richie
Just reading your thread and being on kilroy that was my favorite programs ,my personal appearance was on telly at the been
In 1982 it was a pop programs run over a couple of weeks called if k get it right was by mike smith DJ

Artist,s and one was the wombles I was about four rows up in the audience and there was a good looking young lady sitting next to me
And just before they introduced the wombles the producers came up and asked the young lady to move to another seat and then he turned to me
And sacked me to move up one into net seat next thing happen end one of the wombles came and sat next to me
And they started to sing there along with the camera on him and myself I was on the telly my kids seen me
So I am awaiting patiently for possibly a old showing may come on that's my star bit and I have been Intervied three other occasions

And last year on the beeb radio crew broad cast from home on some think else it went out live ,my neibours all came out to see what was going on

:strawberry:I was on Tuesday Rendezvous when I was fifteen as the winner of a composition relating to the month of May. I still have the book with the composition in and wonder how on earth they chose me. Maybe the only one to enter. I was on with the naturalist Graham Dangerfield and the others on the show were Bert Weedon, Georgina Parkinson from the Royal Ballet and the Allison brothers. About fifteen years ago I took part in a ten pin bowling competition and during my match I was upstaged by Lady Di And Charles's announcement of their forthcoming divorce. Pete went on to win it. My twins were in the documentary "My Twin and I" filmed at Mosely road baths. The Tuesday Rendezvous went out live and have never seen the show. Lovely to read the previous posts. Jean.

Just goes to show Jean how versatile BHF members are;well so far you,Astonian and Old Boy. I think I'm just a closet exhibitionist that the BBC or whatever camera veered towards at that moment in time really. My appearance on Kilroy (just in case BHF wants to avoid a booking from me for a meet-up in the future) relates to me being a bit of a rocker at least 20 years ago in black leather and earrings.

We are very English about public spectacle in this country aren't we, at least those of us over the age of 50. Our American friends (my cousin is from NY) cant wait for the public to have it!

:strawberry:The lads were on several times during filming at Wyndley when celebrity families took part in various tasks. Their part was to ensure the safety of the swimmers during their races etc. There are some people who go on as many games shows as they can. Pete calls them professionals. :strawberry:

I was on TV in an ice skating race at Streatham in possibly 1966, would have to check the date - memory fade. It was shown live in a program I think was called World of Sport. I remember that ITV wanted to put cameras in the centre of the ice and during the race we had to jump very large cables which were laid across the track. When I got back to work on the Monday I had a 'telling off' from my boss who said I should have been disqualified for cutting up an opposing team member going into a corner.

I really enjoyed doing the History Of The Game Show program with Bradley he is a lovely friendly man. As a child of about 8 or 9 I was on the radio doing country dancing about 1961 with Shirley Abacare. I know how did that work, ha ha, it went out on Christmas day too. When I was about 12, I was on Songs Of Praise at Bishop Vesey as I was in the school choir at Arthur Terry School in Four Oaks. We had to go every Sunday to practice for 6 weeks!! Then as you know The Price Is Right in 1983...ha ha All that fame hasn't changed me honest..x

I forgot about Jemma our granddaughter being on a Xmas Panto. She was the fairy who did all the speaking and story telling.

Hi Astonian. This from Wikipedia about Robert Kilroy-Silk. Robert Michael Silk was born in Birmingham, Warwickshire, the son of William Silk, a Royal Navy leading stoker, and his wife Minnie Rose (née Rooke). William Silk was lost at sea, age 22, whilst serving on HMS Charybdis, which was torpedoed by German E-Boats on 23 October 1943. His son was 17 months old.
In 1946 Robert's mother Rose remarried, to family friend John Kilroy, a car worker at the Rootes plant in Warwickshire. He adopted the young boy and gave him the first part of his surname; Robert became known as Kilroy-Silk.
Kilroy-Silk was educated at Saltley Grammar School, Saltley, Birmingham. He attended the London School of Economics to study Politics and Economics. Dave

Robert used to come to Patties and we would sit on the wall chatting. I think he stayed with Patties mom for a while. She does meet up with him at funerals and weddings.

filming at Wyndley
Mention of Wyndley reminds me of a time when I was ice skating on the pool and some rich Suttonian with a special stereo camera crouched on the ice and asked me to skate at him and jump over him as he filmed me in stereo and so that he would have a film of me jumping out of his screen. My very sharp skates almost gave him a haircut !

Hi Dave
Many thanks for that extra bit of info on kilroy I did know the extra bit about Robert and his mother was rose and that he was a true brummie
But I never knew about his father
I was a big supporter of old kilroy for many years and looked into back ground many years ago and of his political carrer
And I whatched every programs he ever made what ever he made be it political or not or ant debates or discussions
Since he stepped down from his political postion I have never heard no more of him and it was only when Richie mentioned is name
It brought my memories of him back to light and of the jokes some com medians used to mention about his name
Scrawled on the walls nation wide on the gents toilet walls
But any way Dave once again thanks for your replying and supplying me about his father
Best wishes as always astonian,,,,,,,
