Help Please. I am trying to find out about my g grandmother, Mary Ann Trotman's family. I know that she was born in 1871 and that her parents were a William Trotman (born about 1843 in Welford) and Sarah A. (?) born 1835 in Norfolk. She also had a brother Ernest born about 1881. I wonder if she had any other siblings. I would love to find out more about William and Sarah. I have found them on the 1881 census but have been unable to go back any further. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much Shera. You have found an older brother William to my g grandmother Mary Ann. I have tried to find this William on the 1881 census when I believe he would have been about 12 and have been unable to do so. I wonder what happened to him?

maybe this is what happened to william.

1881 in melton mowbray leic.

joseph clayton lodger 46 farm labourer b. welford glouc
richard clayton lodger 44 farm lab.
william trotman lodger 14 farm lab.

richard and william ditto for born welford glouc.

these may have been relations or friends of the trotmans who william were staying with and working as farm labourers.

then there is a death record of william trotman

1891 jan-mar birth about 1869 age 22 aston 6d 210

I have neighbours with the surname Trotman. I wonder if Mr Trotman, senior, is related to you?

I wonder?? Would you be able to ask him for any information regarding his family? My family of Trotman's came from Welford on Avon. When researching them I have come across this name in Dursley and various other parts of Gloucestershire.

My great great grandparents, were a William Trotman and Sarah Ann Wier. It appears they had three children, William, Mary Ann and Ernest. My great grandmother Mary Ann married George Heath.

Thanks for the information Shera. This could well be my William - my only thoughts are though that William was born in Birmingham. William Snr married Sarah Ann Wier at St. Phillips and all their children were born in Birmingham. Regarding the death record I don't think this could be my William, as William Trotman is a witness to his sister Mary Ann's wedding to George Heath on 25th December 1891. William Trotman Snr (her father) is noted as deceased on the certificate.

I am trying to find out all I can as a Lionel Trotman was raised by great grandparents. I was very close to my grandmother, Selina Heath and she told me that Lionel was raised by her parents after his parents could no longer look after him. I have found him living with them on the 1911 census aged 7 years. What I do not know is who his parents were. Thanks to Shera, I now know that Mary Ann had two brothers, William and Ernest - so Lionel could be either of their children.

the welford gloucester was just dittoed so they may not have bothered putting bham or they may not have known where william was born. obviously they were neighbours or relations from the past in welford with williams father so it would be an easy mistake to make.

i just think it is TOO much of a coincidence that william is with two people from welford glouc. hope i have explained it properly

i had another look at the 1851 census and richard and joseph clayton were just 2 pages away from the trotmans.
