Traffic islands

terryb18

Gone but not forgotten R.I.P.
Driving around the area a lot, I come across some where the councils make a good effort to make them pleasing to the eye. This one I particularly like, and it is the island at the junction of the collector rd and the B'ham to Coleshill rd at Bacons End. (b4114)

Hanco I like that one and I guess you will have us all keeping our eyes open for islands with a difference. Jean.

Yes and mine Terry but I was told when I fist started and do it every time I want to find something , saves a lot of time on Google.:)

We always have a lovely feature on the island at Bacons End.

This year is the same as last but before that it was a big frog on a lily pad.

This island is upkept by Solihull council.

A couple of years ago you could buy a calender, called Birmingham traffic islands.

I thought there was, but was'nt sure. I have seen some nice ones about, good flower displays. Mind you there are some atrocious ones as well.

There is [or was] a huge traffic island in Hemel Hempstead Hertfordshire surrounded by 4 or 5 satellite islands. It was called the 'Magic Roundabout'.

Hi Ladywood,

It's absolutely fearsome, there are actually six mini roundabouts around the main one. I had to go and see someone down there once, to collect
an item won on ebay, and I got a bit lost. I rang the guy and he asked if I had got to the big roundabout yet. I told him I had passed several
roundabouts, and he said that I would definitely know if I had got to this
one and to take it easy. When I met up with him he said I had done well,
as most people encountering it for the first time usually have an accident!

Kind regards

Dave

Hemels nt that bad as long as you treat it like a seris of mini roundabouts, and dont look. LOL

Much more fun than the one in Swindon.

I nominate as worst roundabout in Birmingham the weird thing at the junction of Maypole Lane/Highters Heath Lane. Not for the driving round of but for the sheer lop sided ugliness of it. Locals refer to it as John Waynes Island - built by cowboys! Must try to get a photo for you.

Hi Col H,

Well, it frightened me anyway, - I did a long detour rather than come back that way!:)

Kind regards

Ladywood sorry I missed your post but I guess you've started something. Nice one Len to follow on from Ladywood. There were some beautiful ones in Gozo but you had to shut your windows as you went past as the flowers encouraged a type of was that had one heck of a sting. Got done by them a few times. Jean.

Hi Len, Sorry to be slow in getting back to you, I've been away for a few days.
Yes of course you are right, Swindon was the first "Magic Roundabout".
The Hemel Hempstead roundabout was constructed the following year in 1973.
The traffic island at Hemel Hempstead is locally known as [their] "Magic Roundabout" as presumably , so do the locals of Colchester and High Wycombe.
I remember driving around the Hemel Hempstead roundabout in the 70's, white knuckles and a very dry mouth.
Thanks very much for you help.
All the best.

Do you mean this one?
The very one hanco, thanks for that.Your photo from that side makes it look quite reasonable, a lot less lopsided and better than it really is. Reckon you caught it's best side there - on second thoughts though, nah, it still looks 'orrible:)

Hanco it makes you feel guidy looking at that one. Will take my camera with me tomorrow and see what we can find over our way. Jean.
