TONKS Family where are you ??

I am trying to find a part of the Tonks Family which I believe came from Aston. If you recognise any of the following names could you please contact me before I get a major headache from hitting the preverbial brick wall :D

John Patrick Tonks (father)
Lily (Lilian) Tonks (mother)
John (son)
Frederick (son)
Frank born 16-03-1912 (son)

Frank married a girl from a different religion and I have been led to believe this is why there was a rift in the family all those years ago. Frank joined the army and ended up married in Essex. Sadly Frank was killed in action in Burma in 1944.

I believe in the 1930's they lived in Frankfort Street. And John (father) was a travelling salesman.

I know a bit about Frank but would dearly love to find his family. If you can be of any help I will be very grateful.

TONKS

Lilian Tonks was my Sunday School teacher in approx. 1955. I remember the family lived in South Road, Erdington and the Sunday School was attached to St. Barnabas' Parish Church in Erdington High Street. Lilian had a daughter at least who also attended Erdington Parish. but I can't remember her name. Lilian was getting on in years back then.
There is one listing in infospace.com(the site I mostly use for phone lookups
since it has a British Telecom feed and doesn't ration lookups per day. On the right hand side of the site down at the bottom is a UK link) for Tonks in
Erdington - K. Tonks, might be a relative. There are a lot of Tonks listings in Sutton Coldfield also. Hope this might help.
 
Thank you very much for the reply - I don't know yet if this is the Lily I am looking for but you are the first person to say you know a Lily !!! If she had a daughter it would be one that I didn't know of so I shall have to start ordering some birth certificates to really get my search off the ground. Once again thank you very much.
 
This isn't a very helpful reply, its just to show willing. I lived in Guildford Street and had friends in Hospital Street (Frankfort Street led into that) in the 40s and 50s. The name Tonks is very familiar to me. I wish I could be of help.

Tonks Family

I went to Burlington Street School Aston, and we had a June Tonks there she was older than me but would probably be in her late 60s, I also recall she had a brother don't remember his name, they came to one of our Reunions about 5 years ago. I believe she lived in the Summer Lane area as a child.
 
I went to Canterbury Road School, whcih is in the Perry Barr/ Birchfields area. There was an Ann Tonks, she would have lived anywhere from Witton to Perry Barr. The one thing I remember was that she was climbing on the iron railings around the playground and impaled her ear. She was a tall fair haired girl and would be in her mid 60's now.

I am a Tonks !!

However the names you listed aren't very familiar to me or my father my name is P. Tonks and I am from Perry Barr/Aston, my father is originally from the Stichly/Northfield area however I too would like to find out a bit about my family history and the surname who knows I may even find that I was related to the original names you listed sorry I have not been of much help my mother grew up in Aston though and her mother and father too (obviously not a Tonks back then though) but shes knows a lot about Aston

I am a Tonks, and have just started to search my family tree.

My father Arthur Raymond Tonks was born in July 1925 had a sister known as "Dorothy" but registered as Thelma D M Tonks born May 1923.They lived in Bevington Road, Aston. My grandad was Arthur Tonks (b) May 1898 and my nan was Elizabeth nee Hughes, I have just found out that my great grandmother was called Matilda nee dixon, and when my grandad was 2 they lived in bracebridge street. Matilda was a Steel Pen Piercer.

I think that, matilda was 1 of 3 children born to Edward and Matilda Dixon who lived at 3back 96 Dartmouth St (1871 census)

Is there anyone out there that can help me, with any family links or details of employers in the area. I would be most grateful.
 
Tonks.

:D I know of a Tonks family who are into swimming and water polo. The dad is Vernon who would be in his 60's and his son is Gary. They live in Great Barr somewhere. My husband worked with a Ronnie Tonks but he unfortunately died about 10 years ago. Bye. Jean. ps I think Vernon is still coaching at tripple s swimming club. :D

If you Google 'Tonks Birmingham' there is a whole lot of information about this family and its Brummie connections. My dad knew an Alf Tonks way back when, and I think he had a company manufacturing packing-cases in Witton.

May not be related but you never know. I knew a Victor Tonks who lived in Nigel Road, Washwood Heath, a culdesac, in the 40s 50s. He could play marbles like you would'nt believe. Around 1950 he would have been about 12 or 13 years old perhaps.
 
I have traced my family back and am connected to the surname Tonks via the name Platt who were also packing case manufactorers

She married My Husbands Grandad in 1933
John Horace Grahame
This was a 2nd Marriage .
He divorced his wife in 1930 up in Halifax and went to start a new life down in Birmingham . Never having contact again with his 2 children an 8 year old girl and a 6 year old boy ,My Father in Law who is sadly passed away . Thing is it would intrigue me if they ever had children because it would mean my hubby has half Uncles he doesn't know about .
I doubt it though as Nelly was 54 when she married the 39 year old John Grahame .
Does this ring a bell to any of you Tonks people ?
Would love to know if any one knew them . We don't even know what granddad Grahame looked like as he never contacted his family ever again . Or at least when and where he died .

The Small Heath Birmingham branch of Lloyds TSB Bank (407/409 Coventry Road, Birmingham B10 0SP) had a manager for many years between the '60s and mid-80s with the surname Tonks. db84124

in 1930 (electoral rolls) john horace grahame was living with an annie grahame at 345 bell barn rd. edgbaston, there were also 8 other people at that address so maybe it was a boarding house?

in 1935 john horace grahame and nellie mary grahame were living 3 court 26 prescott st. all saints ward.
 
it looks like john died in 1937

deaths.. john h g grahame aged 43 died oct-dec 1937 6d 646 birmingham.

that would be the correct age

also looking at electoral rolls again

1945 nellie m grahame 1 bk 112 hingeston st. all saints ward (alone)

1950 nellie m grahame 214 wattville rd. handsworth (living with an emily cox)

I have been searching for about a year now . I Know it is my Husbands family but at least I can lay him to rest now in our minds
I'm afraid he left his wife with 2 small children and ran off with the cheque book . He never contacted them again . No wonder dad didn't speak of him . I still feel sad though but at least now I have found out who he was , where he was born and what he did .. even his war medals so this gives me a conclusion .

you may forgive him a little as he died by 1937. maybe he would have contacted his children if he had lived longer, he was only gone a few years when he died :rolleyes: perhaps it was divine intervention

I wish dad was alive now I am sure he would have forgiven his dad .
My Husband is one of these practical Yorkshire men that doesn't wear his heart on his sleeve .
I have sort of pieced together Grandads life and I suspect as he was probably engaged before the WW1 and then came home after 5 years fighting in France I suspect he may have been a changed man that felt obliged to marry his sweetheart .
I suspect he was a bit of a ladies man too as both his son and his grandson are very handsome :)
They both also inherited his High blood pressure so now I know where that came from too. You can learn a lot from Family History .

No god Bless him I hope at least he found some happiness . BTW isn't it very odd that his grandson Came from Halifax to marry a Brummy girl as well . Im a Brummy born and bred but exiled in Halifax .Once again Many thanks for your time and care and patience shown .

jean, are you a member of ancestry as john horace grahames pension records are on there. if its the correct one he was discharged from the army in 1919 due to malaria

I do the other lot Genes re united . But I did find his war medals in 1915 as he was a driver in France . I didn't know the discharge was for Malaria I haven't seen that one Shera .
Oh just had a thought .. He was obviously with a different woman in 1930 . I hope he didnt have children from that .
You actually are really clever because I have searched for ages for his death .

Hi Rupert, I'm reserching my Great Grandmother who was Sarah Whitmore Tonks B.September 1857 she had six children Harry Ellen Charles Rose kate and Clara and lived with Harry Short who was listed as her brother she was listed as a widow. So far no record of her husband or her parents but in 1871 she was thirteen and a servant for the Stone family in Weston street Duddeston. Would anyone of them be related to your family.
 
my famiy are tonks aston louisa tonks aston dad charles tonks he i think has 3 charles florence and louisa all from aston
the family still lives in birmingham louisa married william h beeston 1927 aston
two sons all born married died in the area
i now live cornwall my mum and sister still live aston
