Plans in 1825 were suggested for a toll house and toll gate on the Castle Bromwich branch of road at a convenient place, between Denbigh Castle, where the road turns off for Coleshill and Stone Bridge

1857 think the tolls were collected by Elizabeth Wright.

The first turnpike act was passed in 1663 but it was not until the next century that large numbers of toll roads were set up. Most of the country’s major roads had been turnpiked by 1750. The tollhouse at Castle Bromwich was probably a simple structure like this one at the Weald & Downland Open Museum, Chichester.1768810794958.png

There was some form of 'gate' with a 'Gatekeeper' and with a 'Turnpike House' situated on the Castle Bromwich turnpike road in 1768. Perhaps this was either a different gate or an earlier gate of that in post #9. Screenshot_20260119_101017_Chrome.jpg

turnpike No. 95 Old Chester Road

On the Chester Road there used to be a tollgate. People had to pay to travel along the Chester Road.
Until the 18th century local people had to look after the roads in their parish. Few people minded paying for roads that they used themselves, but there was a lot of bad feeling about paying for long-distance travellers who were just passing through the village going from London to Chester. One of the cottages on the Chester Road opposite The Green is named Tollgate Cottage. This was not the toll house but a house built near the tollgate in the early 19th-century.
