Hello,

I have been searching for an ancestor of mine,Emma Cox,for some time. She was born in Shropshire, lived for a time in Brierley Hill, and may have moved to the Aston area of Birmingham.

On the 1901 census I have found an Emma married to Joseph TIREBUCK who was born in Aston. In 1901 they are living Aston (St Stephens) with children Joseph and Lily.

Does anyone have a Tirebuck connection in their family from the Aston region,I wonder,or could anyone with knowledge of this area please tell me which church they may have married at?

Many thanks,

Marisan.

Marisan,
Yew Tree Junior School in Aston had a caretaker called Tirebuck during my time there in the 1950's. Maybe there are Education Dept records.
Hope it may help

I know it's been a while,but I am back.

I still haven't been able to find my ancestor Emma, but I am looking again at the possibility that she did marry Joseph Henry Tirebuck. I sent for the marriage certificate, however - a snag - the bride's father's name was wrong. BUT since her father died when she was a child,I am thinking that she may have just got his name wrong.Everything else ties in - age, place of birth (Shropshire) etc.

Now,I have found an Emma Cox on the 1891 census - a servant at No 17 Bracebridge Vill Inn,Aston, working for the publican - Robert Roduc (but I think the surname is wrong on the census transcript) Does anyone at all have any knowledge of this establishment or indeed of the said gentleman,or the correct spelling of his name?

There doesn't seem to be many Tire buck researchers,so I would be very grateful for any help at all.

Many thanks,

Marisan :)

I looked at the 1891 and 1901 for Robert and I believe his surname is RODEN. In the 1901 he is at the same address as the 1891.

The writing on the census in indistinct, but later Kellys directories show that it is “The Vine”, 17 Bracebridge St. The landlord’s name is Robert Roden. He is also landlord in 1881 and 1901, and directories show him there from at least 1876 ( different landlord in 1873 and it was numbered no 6 then) till 1905 , his wife Sarah being listed in 1908, when presumably he had died.
Of possible interest . From 1897- sometime between 1900 and 1902 there was an Edward Tirebuck, shopkeeper at 31 Allesley st, a few hundred yards away from the 1901 address for Emma and Joseph.
Emma & Joseph’s address in 1901 was in 10 court, back 26, Allesley St. The htree addresses ar every close.
On the 1913 map below, Edwards shop is one of the buildings in red (I think the one on the road, but am not certain), Emma & Joseph’s address is one of the blue houses, And the Vine Inn is in green.

hello,
Thank you all so much for the helpful replies and especially Mike for the map. Emma Cox is the last member of this branch of my family for me to find. I have her on the 1881 census and lost her after that. I am keen to 'put her in her place' ,if you know what I mean.
I am thinking that she may have gone to work for Robert Roden and so now I will try to establish a link.from that I hope to prove that Emma Tirebuck is my Emma Cox.
many thanks again.
