Re: tilton road girls school

hi Millie you must have been in A stream to have done dancing as others were not allowed, do you remember Mrs Frankish she took us for needle work and maths her nickname was frankenstien god I hated that woman and the feeling was mutual. Every year I was in top 3 in exams but when it got to 4th year I deliberately talked in the exam to make sure I was not in top 3 as that meant going into her class and when we had her for maths on a monday morning I was always at the doctors with my monthly pains untill doc called for my mom and even after that I used to "wag" off but go in after maths Miss Saunders soon cottoned on. Oh happy days

Re: tilton road girls school

just as I remember it ..thank you also remember the sweet shop on opposite corner
Jean

Re: tilton road girls school

Yes Jean, now you mention it, I do remember Frankenstein - & the maths on a Monday morning. What a wonderful start to the week! Everybody dreaded it. There was a shop on the opposite corner, I think sold sweets & newspaper, or a general store or something, and a pub on the opposite corner. I remember we used to go to the 'tip' at the end of the road to play, and one time a man was coming over the waste ground & we ran off - I lost my shoe that time, and copped out from my mom for it. Never did find the shoe so she had to buy me some new ones (guess she couldn't really afford it) but needs must.

Lots of my classmates moved to Canada or Australia later on, buy I'm still here, & glad I stayed.

cheers all,
Millie

Re: tilton road girls school

Hello Millie,
I see that you are tracing the Godson family ? I have a Gt Aunt who married a GEORGE GODSON in 1903..they lived in Northfield during the 1920's/30's....any connection here ????

Margaret.

Re: tilton road girls school

Hi Skylark,
Nice to hear from you. I've had a quick look at my files & on first glance there doesn't seem to be a direct connection with the Georges in my tree, but there could be something turns up later that connects a bit further back. I don't have all that much on my Godsons - Perhaps we'll be in touch again later on.

all the best,
Millie

Hows this...pretty much as I remember it, but it would have been a 53 bus, not a tram in my day of course.

Where was the chip shop ? Cant for the life of me remember that. I remember Twiggies though, and Gilligans Cafe.

Re: tilton road girls school

The corner shop in the picture then ?

Opposite side of Tilton Rd was what we called a bombuilding round there. I always though bombuilding was what play areas were called when I was little, loads of em around there then, there was another one just behind the George pub as well.

Re: tilton road girls school

The corner shop as i remember was called either Richards or Richardsons it was a grocers. The fish shop was just a door away in Garrison Lane almost facing the George pub. Again i really appreciate you taking the trouble to send that lovely photo. Kathy M
