Tickle/Tickell Family From Birmingham

rainbowdragon

proper brummie kid
I descend from George Tickle who married Mary (Molly) Williams in Doverdale, Worcestershire in 1787, and who shortly afterwards moved to Birmingham where all his children were baptised.

George's eldest son, William was baptised in 1788 and married Martha Randell in 1811 in London. William's child child, George, my great great great grandfather was born in 1818 in Birmingham, baptised in 1824, and was transported to Australia in 1834 for stealing fowls.

The family George left behind in England pursued occupations in the metal and jewellery trade and include silversmiths, silver plate workers, burnishers, jewellers, bellfounders, tin plate pressers, burnishers, etc.

I'd welcome the chance to exchange information with any descendants of this family. On my part, I have a lot of information on the descendants of George in Australia that I would be happy to share.

Hi Tanya, g,day :) There is a William Tickle age 50 (rounded down) a Plater, with daughter Anna age 15
In Suffolk Street (central B,ham) on the 1841 census (Martha may have died?) rest of children older/moved ?
Census ref HO 1071 piece 1146 page 35 Folio 34 book 5
Just a maybe for you,,Ok JohnY

Yes, that's great great great great grandfather and his youngest child. :)

I'm starting to use the censuses to work out the movements of the family. Someone from England (a descendant of the Tickle's) sent my mother a lot of information about the family, but I've still got a lot of things to clear up. Unfortunately, I have no idea who sent the information and I've had no luck in contacting someone from the English branch of the family who's tracing it. I'm hoping that, when I do, they can clear up mysteries beyond Birmingham. The real difficulties arise before they moved to Birmingham. They came from Droitwich, Worcester, and there are a lot more gaps and mysteries there.

I've gotten a lot of information about the descendants of George and I'm hoping to gain equal information about the English branch of the family.

One of the mysteries I'd like to clear up is, what happened to Martha? I'm assuming she died between the birth of her youngest child in 1827 and the census in 1841, but I have no idea when that might be.

Hi Auss :) Martha Tickle not showing up on "Deaths" from mid 1837 to 1841, have checked.
I would presume(dangerous i know  ) that due to Suffolk St B,ham central address (1925 to 1937 to find)
that Martha is "probably in" St Martins Parish records (Bull Ring B,ham)
Others on here have access to these & hopefully will check out for you, C,mon the Gang
Cheers JohnY

Hello Tanya I have had a look at St Martins records and could not find any record of Martha. I found a marriage on 31st March 1823 of Benjamin Southwell and Harriet Tickle the witnesses were Ann Williams and Alexander Saunders. I also found a burial of Ann Tickell on 24th April 1804 listed as pauper.

Tanya,,adding to Wendy,s :)excellent info for you,,
There are "Southwell,s" residing with Tickle,s i gave you at the 1841 Census,
Cheers JohnY

Thanks for that. :) A check of my records revealed that the Southall family in that census is the sister and the niece and nephew of my ancestor William. Still no Martha, though. :(

St Martins Church not the only possibility for Martha,,:) Tanya
There are other B,ham Churches with Parish Records,
Was Martha Catholic ?,, if so then St Chads Cathedral near her last address.
However,,just knowing Martha,s death/burial would be nice but shouldn,t hamper your
searches for "Family connections" hopefully up to present,
Best regards JohnY

It hasn't. I've got a lot of information about the descendants of George Tickle in Australia, and also some information up to the present in England, though I haven't got contact with the person who sent my mother that.

Martha wasn't catholic, at least so far as I know. I know that knowing when and where she was buried isn't vital, it's just a niggling little thing in the back of my mind, not knowing. I also know that it's overly optimistic, but I'm hoping that the burial has her age, so I have something to go on when I try tracing her line. I have no idea whether she came from Warwickshire, like her husband, or from elsewhere. The two were married in London, so that's no help.

Yo Tanya :) Yep its sure a "niggle" when theres a piece missing, We all have these, the vacuums,
However,,how do you know that Martha died pre 1841 ? just because not on census is not proof?
Is her Husband marked down anywhere as a Widower ?
If she did die (1826-1841) Maybe she knew she was ill & returned to London? area of birth ?Her old Family
Maybe she just left her husband,,reverted back to maiden name, took a child/children with her ?
The possibilities are indeed endless & just one of those we all put in the "must have a go at later box"
Nil Desperandum,,give it fair dinkum later;) crack on to your t,others,
Cheers JohnY

All I know is that she disappears and is never heard of again. Her husband died on 21 June 1851, but I haven't been able to find him on the 1851 census for that area, which would have undoubtedly given me more details, and I can't afford his death certificate at the moment. I suppose it's possible she left. I guess this will just have to remain one of those mysteries for now. :(

Thanks for everyone's help, anyway.

And the mystery is partially solved! :)

A descendant of the same family sent me a CD of information in the mail and it arrived today. Among the facts I didn't know, was the death date of Martha. :D

She died on 21 September 1830, at Norfolk Street, Birmingham

I still don't know where she was buried: that didn't appear in the information that was given to me, but at least I'm closing in on it. :)

Rainbowdragon she could have been buried at several burial grounds around the city. St Phillips, St Pauls, St Marys,or one of the non conformist grounds. Have a look at the list I have sent to the Birmingham site above under main sites. Click on Birmingham and then burial grounds on the left hand side. At least you can rule out St Martins.

What's the link called? I can't see anything about cemeteries on the list and I also can't see anything you've sent there.

I would love to contact her, thanks.:D

This will be the first member of the English branch of the family I've been in contact with. :)

I just wanted to say how great this website is. I've only been registered here a brief time and posted one query about my ancestors, and already I've been in contact with a distant cousin. :)

That's more than I've accomplished with all the "Tickle" entries on the genealogy forums and message boards, so thanks everyone. :)

there was a mortuary technician at Selly oak hospital Birmingham named Ralph Tickle in the 1950s and he lived in the same area

Considering the amount of my particular Tickle family in Birmingham, he could very well have been a descendant of that family. Thanks for that, and I'll see if I can slot him in.
