gone but not forgotten
My mum was quite easy-going really, but she had some strong ideas.
"Don't stand with you back to the fire" was one which I think made good sense. I was reminded of this today in snooty pub in snooty Wimbledon Village, where the central heating and smoke extracts were blaring away and a "traditional" open fire fed by gas was beaming out mega calories at the bar counter only three metres (ten feet) away. It was uncomfortable to have this heat on your back.
"Don't eat oranges and drink milk together". I'm not too sure about this, because I've had some nice combinations of cream or yoghurt and orange or tangerine or satsuma. Obviously curdling is the problem.
"After cleaning your teeth, don't swill your mouth straight from the tap". She said there were worms in the water, so you had to fill a glass and then drink out of that (worms and all).
"Don't put your finger half-over the tap to spray the toothbrush clean". My family have regularly done that for 45 years so far.
"You can't eat raw oats in cold milk". I loved it with a bit of sugar, long before muessli had been invented.
My German mother-in-law (God bless her) had loads of golden rules. One our kids couldn't take was that it was unhealthy to eat hot cake, straight from the oven.
