The Wheel Inn, 73 Snow Hill

Hello,

I'm struggling to find details on 'The Wheel Inn' and hoping someone can help.

In 1901 John Gibbons, publican, and his 'wife' Jessie were living at The Wheel Inn, 73 Snow Hill, Birmingham. How long was John publican there, how long was 73 Snow Hill ran as the Wheel Inn, or was it ever known by anything else?

Many thanks

I have had a look in the old papers and I can find two mentions of a Wheel Tavern, Snow Hill
both from Birmingham Daily Post
1 April 1863 - article on a watch being stolen from someone in the Wheel Tavern, Snow Hill
7 March 1873 - transfer of license of the Wheel Tavern, Snow Hill from Thomas Hodgetts to Emma Hodgetts

No street number is given so I don't know if this is the same public house but it might be useful to look at the 1871 for Thomas Hodgetts or the directories.

I have just found an advert in the Birmingham Daily Post 15 March 1865 for the auction of:
73 Snow Hill an old established Beer Shop along with
74 Snow Hill a Greengrocers shop and
5 Tenements to the rear forming number 7 court

In the 1873 Whites directory Thomas hodgetts is listed as running a beerhouse at 73 Snow hill
In 1867 it is The Wheel
No name is given in the 1862,1858 or 1855 directories, but White's 1849 directory and Pigotts 1841 Directory refer to it as the Accomodation Inn.
The 1839 Wrightson's directory does not list no 73 snow hill.
There was a beer retailer listed at no 73 till 1903, but not in 1904
So I think it reasonable to think that there was a pub there form between 1839 and 1841 until about 1903.

George Morgan is listed in Kellys in 1900, and George Jones in 1903, so John gibbons would not have been there for a terrifically long time

Thankyou so much- your help is wonderful. I had searched the papers, but stupidly not as the Wheel Tavern! Many thanks to you both.

Kelly's lists, Geo. Morgan, Beer Retailer, 1895 - 1900, although these dates may be up to 2 years earlier 1893 - 1898, due to publishing times
