Hi All
Pic 1 shows The Wallace around 1905 ? It was on the corner of Balsall Heath Rd and Longmore St. In the doorway are my Grand Parents,
who were the Publicans,Edward Madkins and Hanna Madkins.

Pic 2 shows The Warwick Arms and in the doorway are the Publicans, my Aunt Floss[She was a Madkins] and Uncle Bill Sykes.
I dont know the date of this pic but Aunt Floss was the daughter of Edward and Hanna in pic 1.
Please can anyone tell me where this pub was?

Later Floss and Bill were Steward And Stewardess at the Perry Barr Dog Track for many years.

You're a bit early with the date of the wallace Arms picture. There is no Madkins in Kellys up to the 1913 edition (which would cover 1912. He is there in the 1921 edition . My next directory is 1932 , by which time he is a shopkeeper at 127 Runcorn road, balsall heath.
The directories i have do not include your aunt at the Warwick Arms. I would guess 1930s, but they are not in 1932 or 33. there is a Warwick Arms at 93Long st sparkbrook, but this does not seem to be on a corner

Re: The Wallace Balsall Heath

Hi Mike

Thanks for your help.

Hi Mike
My brother reckons that Bill Sykes Mother ,Mary Sykes, may have been the named Licencee of The Warwick Arms-would this make any difference
to the research that you kindly did via the Kellys directories??

Thanks again
Pete

Went through the directories that I have and couldn't find a Sykes landlord. I did find a Mary Sykes , pork butcher, who took over william Sykes pork butchers shop about 1899, but no licensee. Other thing is of the three Warwick Arms listed over the years, none seem to be by a corner(looking at Kellys by street). Of course not all pubs were listed by name in Kellys, some were only listed as "beerseller " or the like, so it might be another another pub not named. I do also have 1o year gap, which I should soon fill, between 1921 and 1932. I take it I am correct in assuming that it was definitely in Birmingham, as there are/were warwick arms in wolverhampton, burton, leamington and Warwick (though the Warwick one seems to have been a hotel,(proper hotel probably fairly large).

Having drank in the Warwick Arms Long Street, I can tell you that the photo is not of that establishment. As stated by mikejee it was not a corner house.

Hi Mike and Phil

Mike
The Warwick Arms was definately in Birmingham.
By the way I knew that Edward Madkins owned a shop at a later date but didn't know where, thanks for the address.

Phil
Where did you obtain the address 323 Bradford St[relative to The Warwick Arms] and was it on a corner?

Pete

Hi Pete

I got it from Kelly' Trade Directory 1903, when I answered I had only looked in the trades directory section, but I have just looked in the street section. It is just possible that it may have been on the corner of Mill Lane and Bradford St. The Landlord was a George Samworth. In 1913 it was a Harry Foster. My next Kelly's is 1937 and by then the pub had gone.

I'm afraid not. In the 1900 kellys there is 326 Amos Bird & Sons dining rooms ar 326 before mill lane. it wouldn't be the first time kellys got numbering wrong and put a house number the wrong side of a sideroad, but the map attached shows a PH one building away on the lower number side ab out where the warwick arms is.I did wonder if it wasn't a side road down the side of the pub, as hte ,ap does show an alley, but there is a road name on the side (I assume that's what it is ). Tried stretching it to read it . Makes ita bit better, as you can see, but still can't identify road

I saw the other building listed in the 1903 Kelly's, but as there was no number I thought it might be part of the pub, but by the time of the 1913 edition there were 2 buildings before the pub. I thought there had been some re-numbering.

I tried playing about the the street name plate also, all I can see is B*SI** St. Or something like that

Could it be Bissell St? In the 1921 kellys there is a Charles Smith, beer retailer at 36 macdonald st, in the right position on the corner of bissell st to be the pub (if the beer retailer was a pub). In 1932 it was william phillip Macleod and 1933 it was william leslie hales. In 1940 it was the Town Arms, but this could be a change of name. Anyone know what the town Arms looked like ?

I don't think that could be the location, I didn't know the Town Arms (too young). I remember the Town Crier that replaced it and I've had a few drinks in there I have a lot of mates that used it, some still do. I never heard a reference to it once being called the Warwick Arms, but you never know.

I'm the grandson of the licensed victualler of the Wallace as recorded in the 1911 census, Charles Neale. There is a mention in the first link of 2 images, one being for the Wallace thought to be in 1905, but I'm unable to acces this. Any suggestions please?

My grandfather, Charles F Neale, was recorded at the Licensed Victualler at the Wallace in the the 1911 census. I'd be interested to see the picture from 1905. Any suggestions? Steve

Hi Stevecanto

Not 1905 and a fair while later I'm afraid, but The Wallace all the same

Steve, the site was hacked and all photos I am afraid were lost. (You can see the note regarding this on the opening page).

Thank you very much. My Mum had memories of it when she was a child, she was born in 1913, so I wouldn't expect it to be very different. My Mum's Mum lost the Pub when her Husband Charles Neale died. The brewery were good enough to let her manage an off-license after that. Thanks again.
