THE TREES HOCK HILL AND ANGLESLEY ST 004.JPGhi folks..i read in a pub book that the trees pub was next to york terrace and as i have never heard of in went in search and its still there although there is no sign up to say so...took a walk up the still cobbled york terrace but was not expecting to find what i did...behind the trees pub is an old out building and being nosey i took a look through the fencing and was met by the mens old urinals..anyhow i thought these pics maybe of interest to those who used to drink in the trees...

Absolutely fantastic Photo of the old urinals, my dad would have used them MANY times.

happy to oblige happyguy...must say i did have to look twice as i couldnt quite believe that they were still there..im not really up on the mens loos but surely there cant be many originals that are still around and even less actually in use..if at all...that pic only shows 4 but i think there was 6 in all..had to put my arm and camera through the metal fence to snap them but it was difficult to get the angle to capture them all..

Loved looking at the photos Lyn. I can't remember where the Trees pub was on Hockley Hill but I must have passed it many times. I have just found York Terrace on Google so now have an idea of the position! Thanks for posting all the pics.

THE TREES HOCK HILL AND ANGLESLEY ST 014.JPGhi judy turn left at where hockley chem was at the bottom of vyse st the trees is just a few yards on the left..a little bit further down on the same side was the duke of york on the corner of key hill and hockley hill...this is all thats left of the duke...the black door led into the inside passage...never went in the trees but i went in the duke a few times..wonderful victorian pub and the bar was something to die for..looted a few times and the bar and fittings were taken..it lay empty for a few years and then without explanation just colasped..

Thanks Lyn. I was too young to go into pubs when I lived in Handsworth but I did work in Hockley when I was 15. My first job from school was on Hockley Hill, so these pubs would have been up and functioning at that time. Sad to see they have all deteriorated like this.

think you know judy that my first job from school was in vyse st so i would have walked past both pubs many times...once again i say to myself if only i had taken more notice of our fine buildings but at 17 i dont think we do...

I remember Lyn. I worked at Harry Astburys Electrical Engineers on Hockley Hill. And I would walk to and from work most days passing by buildings that I just ignored. I also wish I had taken more notice of buildings/places but when you are a teenager those things are far from your mind. There are so many places I would like to explore that are now gone. Wouldn't be great if there was such a thing as a time machine and we could go back for a day and have a good look round again.

morning judy..wish i had a quid for everytime i wished for a time machine lol...this is why i keep saying that the old photos that are posting are most important...like a lot of other members i love to when time permits get out and about and capture what we have left of the old history of brum its surprising what you can find walking the streets and being nosey..for instance i didnt expect to find the old urinals at the back of the trees pub lol..

Thanks for the photos Lyn. The Trees and The Duke were my dad's old watering holes when he finished work at the Sorting Office on Hockley
Hill.
I passed them often when I worked for Swallow Raincoats and then in the JQ. Never went in of course...........well, maybe a couple of times for celebrations.
Sad to see them both looking like this, though I PROMISE I never ever saw the urinals. NEVER EVER....so there!

I have only just caught up with this thread, featuring Astoness's inspired exploration at the back of the Trees pub on Hockley Hill. There is another splendid rank of porcelain urinals - still in use - in an outhouse across the yard behind the Turf Tavern in Bloxwich. The whole pub is a remarkable and rare timewarp, well worth a visit by anyone interested in historic interiors. Full description and photos here:

Lyn - The room to the left of the corridor in the Turf at Bloxwich, with handsome Edwardian green leather bench seats, isn't normally open - but be sure to ask the landlady: she will unlock it for you. Note that the pub isn't open until 7 p.m. during the week, and remember to have a shufty at the outbuildings in the back yard. Enjoy!
 
thanks for the tips viewfinder i will remember that...how unusual not to open up until 7 at night in the week...do you know their opening times at the weekend by any chance? oh and dont worry...outbuildings are my speciality lol...

Lyn - Opening times of the Turf Tavern are 7-10.30 every evening, and 1-2.30 at lunchtimes on Friday, Saturday and Sunday only. Phone number is 01922 407745 if you want to check in advance.

While in Bloxwich, you may like to look at the Romping Cat at 97 Elmore Green Road, a few minutes' walk from the Turf towards the railway station. It's a cosy and basic three-room local built in 1900 and still with original counter, bar back, fixed seating and other features; Grade II-listed.

thanks again viewfinder i have noted all that down..the romping cat sounds great...

and mike very funny ha ha...actually i went back to the trees today and those old urinals at the back are still there but its all blocked off now so no access to them...good job i took those photos of the when i did...
