The Towers pub, Great Barr

I used it, but not very often, when we lived in Dyas Avenue in the 60s. I also helped my mum out there when they were short of waitresses for a wedding reception...hated every minute of it!

I had some 'long business lunches' there in the 80's - just a short trip up Dyas Rd from our office in Hamstead....:)

Used to live in Carmodale Avenue which was the Towers side of Rocky Lane.

Used to go to the towers from time to time, usualy on a Friday evening or Sunday afternoon, in the early 1990's

Had my stag night their April 1971 lived down the road Foden Rd. My Dad was secretary of the Towers Bowls Club

Drank there most nights late 80's early 90's and in 93 I moved onto the Walsall Road six houses up from the Towers.

Took my Grandad there a few times in the mid 70's when he was unable to walk to "his local". Bill Hickman of Rockford Rd - anyone remember him?

I had my 21st birthday party at the Towers pub and my photos show me with the "cottage loaf" backcombed hairstyle. awful bright Miners apricot lipstick etc etc. We had a wonderful time until my cousin pinched my boyfriend on the way home. There we are - all my memories of Brum are good. We lived on the Walsall Road, and Glendower Road. Before that in Aston, on the corner opposite the Church, in a sweet and tobacco shop. We used to mind the cars for the Villa football matches and get 3d a time ! Played for hours in Aston Park and Perry Hall Park. Life was good in those days. Now in Essex and don't think I would find my way round Brum anymore ! I am retired and enjoy looking up any information on Birmingham.

Grew up in Charnwood Rd Great Barr so i remember passing it many times........
Used to go to the Clifton and Beacon cinemas as a youngster......Good memories of the area!
Now live at Phillip Island Victoria Aust.......Home of the Little Penguins.

An Old Birmingham Pub Information Appeal
Good Afternoon,

I send this appeal with hope of anyone knowing anything that could help me.

My granddad (Arthur Grainger) now in his late 80's ran a pub in Birmingham called the Towers, Great Barr, hopefully someone may know it.

Whilst rooting through some scrap books of mine I found a photo from a charity football match which is estimated to have been played in around 1971 or 72. This photo is clearly a pub team as he ran the pub from the late 60's through to roughly 1978.

My problem is this, I can only name 3 of the players, my Grandad - Arthur Grainger, my dad who was only young at the time 16 i think - also called Arthur but known as "Arch" and I happen to know that Tony Iommi from the band Black Sabbath features in there somewhere.

I was hoping anyone might know anything about this match, or even the time my grandad was at the pub. If anyone has a photo he might be in which I could copy or any lead I could follow to try and get more info I would be most grateful, wanted to surprise him with a little trip down memory lane.

I know my plea is weak, but I thought, where better to start?

Thanks Guys

Sam
