The Sydenham Palace (formerly known as The Green Man)

I'm not sure if this is the same place, but this is the Sydenham Hotel which was at 43 Edgbaston St.

Lost photo replaced, not necessarily the same one

Phil - Wow - that's fantastic thanks. The next address on the 1881C is 44 so spot on I reckon. Any idea when the photo was taken please?

The Sydenham Palace was at 43 Edgebaston St. In 1880 and 1893 it is listed as run by Henry Smith, but maybe he was the owner, rather than the person who ran it. Between 1884 and 1888 its name was changed to the Criterion. Although Phil’s picture shows “hotel” above the door, it soen’t seem to have been listed as th esydenham Hotel in Kellys. This might have been so as not to mix it up with the pub of that name in Golden Hillock Road

I'm afraid I have no idea of the age of the photo. The trouble is that these old buildings hardly changed from the day they were built until the the day they were demolished. As there is very little else in the photo to date it by, it could as easily be 1950 as 1900.

Thanks Mike & Phil. From the (tired) state of the building on the photo with no similar building either side (ie perhaps area bombed or being demolished) and what looks like "Criterion Hotel" rather than Sydenham over the door I would guess that the photo is later in it's life, perhaps near to the time of its demolishing sometime in the C20th - does anyone know when that was please or when the area was developed?

Aiden i seem to remember that building being there in the late 50s--early 60s it was probably demolished about that time when they cleared the Bull Ring area. Dek
