The Snuggery Harborne

linclo

proper brummie kid
Hi I hope some one out there may be able to help me i have for a number of years been trying to locate a building called the Snuggery from the 1841 census for Harborne. forgive me if i make any mistakes as i am new to this but this has drove me barmy for many years now if anyone has any information i would be so gratefull
Linclo

Hi Linclo, welcome to our friendly forum. The name suggests to me a very small cottage or perhaps a small pub. Were there any other clues on the census? A street or road? Do you know what building/ address came before and after this building on the census? Does the building only exist on the 1841 census or is it on the 1851? If it is there on the 1851 census what is the occupation of the person living there?

Do you know for sure that it was a separate building? One of the usual names for a particular bar in a pub was "The Snuggery" often shortened to just "The Snug". If the building listed next to it was a pub, you might find that it was just a bar in that pub. Since you refer to the census rather than the trade directory, you could find that it's an address for one of the bar staff or one of the regulars. It would be odd to find that someone actually lived in the bar of the local pub no matter how many people have been said to over the years.

Did you find this on an original or a transcript? If it was the original then moving on or back a few pages might let you find a road or place you recognise. That might give you a "fix" on its position. I have had to do that a couple of times. If you want to post a surname I will see if I can help more.

janice i was thinking on those lines as well...the 1841 census does not give us much info so maybe having a look at what addresses the neighbours lived at may help...must say the snuggery does sound pubish but could it have also been an area called the snuggery...just a thought

Edward Chitham says in his book "Harborne" says, "the other end of Greenfield Rd where the Snuggery, partly a decrepit old medieval building was inhabited by nailers and men out of work "

Well done Phil. Sounds as if it was a sort of lodging place for men with little or no money. I wonder if it appears on any maps?

wow i cant believe so many lovely peoples may be able to help thank you all
this is what t i know so far
my great great great grandfather was boirn at the snuggery in 1840 after reseraching the family up and down the various sons daughter etc the family all seem to be based around Greenfields Road.
i do have Eward Chithams book which only whetted my curiosty more
it must have been a large building of some kind as the census is about 3 pages long just for the snuggery.
the enumerators route was as follows
From the "Snuggery to Greenfield road taking in Poyners corner to the end of Harborne Town, down the Hagley Road to the crossways to the old workhouse.along Gillhurst Lane to the Ravenhurst, back to the workhouse again to the Birches and on to Harrisons Green

it think i am getting the hang of this now i am very new to this thank you all for your quick responses to my enquiry i have certainly been taken by surprise!!

Hi Janice
thank you for all your suggestions i am very new to this, i have to admitt to only using online sources but i do always check the original copies of the pages. i have the enumerators route i tend to feel that it must have been located somewhere by the police station or the Royality , i had at one time thought that it may be a house by the name of the Shrubbery which i believe was on the corner of Harborne Park road but i ruled this out when i discoverd that it was up for sale in about 1876. the Snuggery does not appear to be in the 1851 census, i have no idea why i have a fixation on this but i realy would love to know the exact location. the name of the family i am researching is Bramich but even this is difficult as there are so many variations on the spelling !!! the family were also closely linked to the Rose family

Hi Lynn That's my name too!! thank you so much i have no idea why it has drove me barmy you know! but when i get the bit between my teeth i just have to follow it through and try every avenue , i have bought all sorts of maps and have every photo copy for Harborne but i think it has to be on the Tithe map for Harborne under a plot no. it is just discovering which one and who the land belongs to ! i have a feeling it may be Theodore Price i have yet to research him :topsy_turvy: thanks for your help lynn i do appreciate it

Linclo, You say you have the copy of Edward Chitham's book 'Harborne A History' - on Page 63 at the bottom of the page is reference to a Marianne Bramwich. Do you think she may be one of your ancestors having the name you mentioned or similar spelling?

Anthea

Cannot find references to where The Snuggery is. Greenfield road at that time seems to have had only a cluster of buildings around the junction with High St, together with a property two thirds down belonging to Daniel Cox. I would think the Cox building is unlikely to be the Snuggery, but the census does go Snuggery- Poyner's corner (wherever that may be)-Lodge road, so it would seem that the enumerator is going from east to west, and the Snuggery is at the east end of Lodge Road. Can't find any evidence of buildings there though.

Mike,

In the book "Harborne" by Edward Chitham he tells of David Cox being moved by the poverty at the other end of Greenfield Rd where the Snuggery Stood, so I took that to mean up toward what is now Vivian Road or even the High Street.

I agree Phil, that would seem to be indicated. There is one mention of Poyners corner as a description of a document in the Staffs archive . the description states:
Justices' certificate of completion of two highways in Harborne, extending from Poynor's Corner in the road from Harborne church towards Birmingham to the Harborne Tavern, and from a point in that road to the corner of Harborne town on the road to Smethwick.
But this does not seem to be much help , as i cannot work out what highways they are talking about.

The Harborne Local History Group might be able to help. They meet at Harborne library and can be contacted via the library (according to Google!).

Hi To all it looks like i have got you all going on this one:biggrin:!!!! can you understand now why it has drove me barmy?!!! i had tried the Harborne History society and they seem to think that it would be where St Marys church is now but that is on Vivian road which i think used to be Lodge road, it would help if we knew where Poyners corner is, the census route does not make sense to me, but thank you all for your interest and willingness to help i am bowled over :moon:

Hi Anthea
as i say i have this week chased up the various sons and daughters and anyone on the tith map with the name Rose or Bramich , Marianne does not appear to be related to my branch and unfortunatly neither does the bramich that seemed to farm most of the land around the Hagley road mores the pity.

Thank you i think that may just be the direction to take i will do that this weekend i just hope i can read and make sense of it:triumphant:

hi Mikejee
you sound like you have some interesting material you are consulting ? may i ask what it is? but many thanks for looking into it for me:triumphant:

I wonder if it changed its name to Princes Corner in Harborne? If you cross the road from there so that the High Street is to your right, that road will bring you to Lordswood Road and eventually to Bearwood then onto Smethwick

the material you refer to is the map below, of harborne 1834, the order of streets listed in the 1841 census (usually , though not always exactly) the streets follow the line taken walking the enumerators route) and the poyners corner ref from https://www.archives.staffordshire....ow.tcl&dsqSearch=(RefNo=='AA01/6/1/2/355/11').

Hi Mikejee
You Know this map is like a completley different version to mine, for the first time i can see details that were just ink blots soooo much better on screen too as it is enlarged i love maps and seeing how an area has changed. what are the quarter session bundles that you referr to? can you purchase copies or do you have to go along and view them ? i have never come across this site before ?

You would have to go to the archives. All I have is what is on that link. I think the version I put on may actually be a different version, as I have a similar one which is very blurred, but also misses out some things, in particular the buildings at the west end of greenfield road
