The size of you eggs.

G G Jean

Brummy Wench.
I was talking with Jennyann the other night about how the size of eggs vary. Here are two rows of eggs the front being from our local farm and the back row from our local Aldi stores. Why do the sizes vary as they were both bought as large eggs?. Jean.

Anej, Guten Abend, Aldi is a German store so perhaps those are large eggs in Germany

Egg sizes are Jumbo, Extra Large, Large, Medium, Small and Peewee. Medium, Large and Extra Large are the sizes most commonly available.

eggstraordinairy ain't it!

Kime thought we were both members of the European Union [or something that sounds like that] so sizes and shapes have to agree. Thanks Beamish for that. By the way the eggs from Wrights farm are £2.00 for a tray of 30 LARGE EGGS. That is good value. Guten Nact. Aejn.

eggzactly how do they measure them ? I thought it was by the weight of the little lion ?lol and not yolking

Tom I promissed Jennyann I would ask how they were sized when we went to collect the eggs but the boss was laid up. Actually I think he was ill from being hen pecked. Jean.

The smallest eggs I've found are at Lidl - you need a dozen to make a decent portion of scrambled eggs.

The largest (and best) are from T Hand Butchers on Queslett Road - thick shells, all brown, deep yellow yolks and taste! £0.88 for half a dozen.

The biggest rip-off is at Somerfield's - £1.89 for 6 eggs labelled large that aren't even medium. Paper-thin shells and pale yolks.

I've eaten many a brekkie in Germany, where they really like their boiled eggs in the morning, same as we do, but you need 2 of theirs to equal one of ours. French supermarket eggs aren't worth buying - we get ours from a farm when we're in France.

Anyone who buys a fridge-freezer with an egg-tray will know that continental eggs are invariably much smaller than UK. I can't get T Hand's eggs in the tray of my fridge.....

Big Gee

All yolking aside Jean that is good value the other day in Asdas we refused to buy any eggs because they have put the price UP AGAIN as was the milk and bread we are being ripped off by the supermarkets... now we may have to buy our eggs from your supplier Jean

Big Gee trying to picture T Hand butchers. Where exactly is the shop please?. Tom I don't blame you my daughter in law bakes cakes for a cancer charity and uses loads of eggs a week so we get them from the farm for her. The owner gives her eggs that are dented or marked to use the same day. Jenny and myself just wondered how sizes can vary so much. Tom we only bought the eggs from Aldi as we had run out but they are the next best value to the farm. I prefer Wrights farm Barr Beacon as the Cat and Fiddle or Farmer Johns is close by. Can't get home without passing one or the other. Jean.

Jean,

T Hand's shop is in the row of shops by The Deer's Leap. Not only eggs, but his meat in general is excellent - and if he reads this he'll know that my favourite is a nice slice of hip-bone steak....an inch thick at least....

Thanks for that Tom. They do also sell poor shelled eggs at give away prices but some are not suitable for boiling but for baking and my egg foo yung. Big Gee thanks I think I know now. Is or was there a shop where they make wedding cakes etc to order?. Thanks again both. Jean.

Thanks for putting this up as a thread. As Jean mentioned I was curious
since we(husband and myself) can't help noticing the difference in the size of eggs from what they used to be. Not only that there is the quality to be
concerned about. I usually buy a tray of 20 Extra Large Eggs from a Chinese greengrocer in Vancouver and they are like the large eggs I remember from years ago with thick shells and bright yellow yolks. Our local Supermarket eggs are as Lloyd describes them. thin shelled and very pale yolks. I know the Egg Marketing Board used to keep an eye on such things but these days you never hear about them.

I've heard that size doesn't matter.

Well done Tom & Maggie for refusing to buy when prices go up.

I find it cheaper to buy from local shops (private one's) lately, when you take the cost of transport and Bus fares and all the weight you have to carry.

Example just to get our electric topped up now cost £5, bus fare (no we don't do banks) per week Bus fare its just gone up again? wages held, petrol down etc. I could say more. Think on

Our local CO-OP sells extra large free range eggs they are really fresh and tasty. Free range eggs are more difficult to control size than mass produced eggs.

I asked. "How much are your Eggs?" He said. "90p a dozen." I said "How much are your cracked eggs?" He replied. "15p a dozen." I said. "Good - crack us a dozen."

Cracking jokes you pair. Oh Alf just noticed you'r little bit about size does not matter. Too true its quality that counts every time. Jean.

Still about eggs. There is a good web page called egg jokes. Some good ones but not on this forum. Jean.

Two things baffle me about eggs, firstly if we now use the metric system why do they still sell them by the dozen? Secondly them Lion marks on the eggs, where do the insert the printer ink cartridge in the Chicken?

Am yow Brummies any good at proper grammar? Which is correcet: The yolk of an egg is white or the yolk of an egg are white?
