When I was a kid the School Board Man was feared by every child and parent, if you were sick you were not allowed outside during school hours. Go down any shopping centre during the day in the 1940s all you would see were women doing their daily shopping, all the men were in work. Today is very different, the number of kids one sees on the streets is ridiculous.
I came across the the following whilst researching a Great Uncle of mine at St Clements School in Nechells. This was tucked away in the school records.
Aston School Board Feb 1896
8310 visits to patents on behalf of 310 absentees
8459 Irregulars
479 Kids found in street
Excuses
3371 sickness 798 under five
228 poverty 1972 misc reasons
772 illnes of parents 1154 without excuse
697 infectious diseases 139 summonses issued
266 temp absence from home
Fines
4 parents 5/- 1 Parent 3/- 4 parents £2:0:0 5 parents £1:0:0 each
I don't know for what period this was for or for what area but they were certainly on the ball.
Has anyone been 'done' for truancy ? It wasn't the done thing in my day
