hi mike thanks for the map..what im trying to find out is where was this retreat place...it says off sutton st..but where??? there appears to be 2 sutton streets...i guess one could be sutton st north or something like that....ps love ya avitar....

The retreat is on Mike's map Lyn top end of Sutton Street off Wilkinson Street. The name on the house reads Landsdown Place. They would have been so proud to own a horse and cart like this!

Sutton street from Aston road north to Park lane it crosses Park lane and becomes Upper Sutton street the photograph does not appear to be either Sutton street or the Retreat there were no raised footpaths in this area that I knew off this area had very posh houses even a Manor house at one time.
The Retreat branched off Sutton street to join with Wilkinson street then into Clarendon street. when we were kids we never called it Wilkinson street it was all ways known as the Retreat there was a bomb peck there which became a playground in the winter you could sledge down to Phillip street.

Brilliant John as Lyn say's your knowledge of the area is amazing. You just can't beat local knowledge. I wonder where the photo was taken. I suppose if we knew where the houses called Landsdown Place were it would help!

I wonder if it that area had a raised pavement and double curb. The plot thickens!

john..if bell barn road is off sutton st that must be where the pic is taken...

Here is Lansdowne place (off bell barn road) on the 1890 map. Doesn't look much like the photo. Things could have changed between then and the photo, but I don't think its likely

John,
What I remember of the Retreat, was a large coal yard.My relatives the Baglins used to load their lorry's there.
The name Lansdown Place would be a group of houses, there are some left in Victoria Rd.and others in Bevington Rd.and Aston Brook St.

I remember playing on the retreat of Sutton Street when I was 6 or 7 but never realised at the time it was the result of bomb damage.

Went there one day with a friend and we were grabbed by a gang of older lads probably about 10 years old, they had made a fire from scrap timber and took great delight in swinging us by our arms and legs over the fire.

Never told mum at the time as I shouldn't have been there anyway.

One of the lads was Roy Holder of "Whistle Down The Wind" fame. I wonder if he would remember it now. The few times I have seen him in that film I have to smile that he is portrayed as being young and innocent.

John

l remember the retreat quite well...if you went to the top of upper webster street it ran into the retreat and then curved around into sutton street, and john l remember slidding down that hill into phillips street when the snow was on the ground...either in a piece of cardboard or a piece of wood ...happy days did.nt cost a penny to have fun in those days...l went to school with june holder sister roy holders sister....Brenda
