The Lyndhurst - Sutton New Rd

Dyan

master brummie
I worked there for a few years as a Barmaid at nights - it was a "Prodestant pub", the "Catholic Pub" was the Cross Keys they were either side of Erdington Abbey RC Church - however we had the only Ballroom so on St Pats night it was shall we say "interesting" after a few pints of the old Guinness went down. It was great fun - it was while I was working there that I learnt the art of Brandy and dry ginger - only you only had the ginger and pocketed the rest of the money - well a girl had to make a shilling or two? Trying to remember the surname of the landlord he was Bill ??? and he had a wife who was like Rennes wife out of 'allo 'allo - her name was Dorothy - old battle axe she was.

Hi

Yep thats the one I just remembered the landlords name was Bill French, it was a new pub when I was there and very much chrome and glass. So Frothy it ended up as a "flying Jug" did it that is what we call them here when fights break out every night and there is a little bit of "dealing" going on.

I will try and find some photos I have of it and Bill as long as you dont laugh - it was the swinging 60's remember. Its late at night here so it will have to be tomorrow now. So from New Zealand its goodnight.

If I can do it here is me in the 1960's in the "posh bar" and also Bill French the landlord at the time. I think it worked.

Hi Dyan, I worked in the grocery shop (Was Hancox and Dodge and then Moyal and Adams) just along from the Yenton in the 1960's. The address of the shope was 167 Sutton Rd.
We lived in Hayes Grove that ran off Pitts Farm Rd just down the Chester Rd. I too now live in New Zealand in Ch-Ch... where are you ?

Hi Pomgolian

I am at present living in Paeroa (known for L&P drink) but we are selling up and coming down to Ch-Ch as other halfs family all come from down there. Prestons Rd is named after his family and part of the family farm is still there. We are looking at coming to New Brighton/Redwood/Rolleston depending on what price we get for this place - however selling is the problem nothing moving on the Coromnadel at present. I worked for Dunlop - Racing Division for many years at Fort Dunlop came here in 1968. My parents home was in Dunvegan Rd which is off Spring Lane in Erdington, they came out here in 1991 Dad died in 1993 and Mum two years ago.

Wow what a small word we now live in... I live in Burwood close to Brighton and know the areas you mention well... Built a house in Rolleston about three years ago but sold it, used the money for a trip back to the UK and Europe in 2007. I've been to Paeroa (with the big bottle) and love the stuff with Southern Comfort...:)

Alf. Thanks for that piece of video. Thats another one gone from my memory now. Was never in it, but drove past it often enough. And like Frothy, I like the music. Barry.

Yes it is a small world and getting smaller - suppose you had your photo taken at the "big Bottle" everyone does - suppose we should before we leave here - typical lived here for 8 years and never done it. Burwood is also on our Radar screen for houses - I think for us its the house that is important - having three Birman Show cats we have to have some "security" they have been bought up in a rural area with little or no traffic and I would hate them to end up as "road kill". when we get down there we will have to meet up, I am looking forward to getting stuck into researching other halfs family in the Museum where we believe they have heaps of docs referring to Gt Grandfather also to being able to do some research with the NZRAF as well for another part of the family.

My last trip to UK was in 1991 and I realy have no desire to ever go back again, Erdington High Street to me was no better than shopping in Mumbai, everyone wore drab clothes, shuffled round looked downcast, there was more graffitti than on a Billy Apple painting, roller shutters on all the shops and every other one owned by people of other than English Heritage. What got me was that I have a UK passport and at the airport I was welcomed at Customs by a guy wearing a turban who said Welcome to My Country with an Indian accent........

There was a over 30's Disco which later became a divorced and seperated venue, around the early 90's. It was a worry leaving you car in the car park in a rough area.

Dyan, it changed its name to the Star Members Club about 10 years ago I think but here's a pic in its Lyndhurst guise. Bob

Pete's dad lived in a flat just up from the Lydhurst and he would toddle down for a pint of guiness during the day. I went in there after a funeral at the Abbey a few years ago and once at night when Pete took his dad out but I did feal uncomfortable as though you shouldn't be there. Jean.

Are yes the good old Lyndhurst, when I worked there except on St Paddys night it was Northern Irish/Prodestants only, cant quite remember how Bill kept the peace that night as there was usually a St Pats Night do in the ballroom - which was funny as I was RC - those from the Abbey went to the Cross Keys. I worked there just after opened and it was all chrome and glass but even then it could be "cliquee" any strangers were eyed with suspicion. I only served in the front bar, Bill French used to run the Main Bar and no one argued with him 6ft 6" ex copper, his wife was a Dragon and 5ft nothing in high heels but one look from her and the beer went "off". It was just a part time job for me to supplement my University studies as in those days we had to pay our own fees. I seem to remember some one telling me that it was thought that the bombers for the Mulberry Bush etc planned it or were associated with the Lyndhurst but I was long gone to safe places (NZ) by then and it could have just been rumour.

I parked a Mini near here once, when I returned the two front headlights were totally removed..............
