Have just been reading a review of a book for the anoraks on the forum, its called The lost joy of Railways, Remembering the Golden Age of
Trainspotting, it contains evocative images from the golden age of train
spotting. You can almost smell the billowing smoke, steam and oil of the
engine sheds. The book covers all the main railway regions and reminds you of the day trainspotters could go about their business without fear of
being suspeced as terrorists on a recce. It is published by David +Charles
Books @£25.99. Bernard67Arnold

This summer I spent a lot of time in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and from our little village of nine inhabitants (wonder what Dr Beeching would have thought of that?) took the hourly mountain train into town passing through four tunnels on its way. In the tunnels, due to the constant high temperatures this summer, you could really smell the layers of tar and smoke from an illustrious bygone age of the Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois (CFL) conjuring up those same images of the lost joys of railways. Having said that I still enjoy the train journey down that valley with breathtaking scenes in every bend and when coming out of each tunnel.
