The 1872 PO directory lists Elijah Lane at a beer retailer at 3 Hagley road. As it is not named, it is probably a beerhouse. I will look out anything else I can find later this evening mike
Shirley Looks like his wife took over the place . Up to the mid 1850s this part of Hagley road was called Hagley Row. Up to the 1880s no 3 (or 3A in some years ) was a beer retailer (described as a beerhouse in 1873), with the following landlords:
1839-41 William Richards (no not given in 39 and given as 2 Hagley Row in 41, but sure it must be same place) 1845-58 Mrs Ann Richards (not listed as living there 1851 census) 1861-68 James Roberts (listed in 1861 census) 1871-78 Elijah Lane (listed in 1871 census) 1879-83 Mrs Elizabeth Lane (listed on census 1881) Between 1883 and 1884 numbering of Hagley road changes from consecutive numbering (1,2,3…) to odd one side , even the other (1,3,5,7…) No 3 Hagley road becomes no 5 Hagley Road 1884-90 Mrs Elizabeth Lane 1891-85 Edwin Caldwell (listed census 1891) 1896-97 Mrs Louisa Caldwell 1899 Pub ( and nos 1-7 Hagley Road, not listed)
None of the censuses or Kellys list the name of the pub, so cannot confirm name, , The pub must have been the building in red on the c1889 map. All photographs I have seem to be post 1900. On the map five ways is at the right edge and the road going accross from left to right is Hagley Road mike
