This photograph was taken in 1947. Interesting to note that it was called Goldsmiths and Jewellers Arms at this time.

I didn't know, Lyn. I had to look twice at the picture to make sure it was the same pub. How old is the pub?

i think roughly mid 1830s to 1840s BB...certainly got some age to it ...really must try and find time to try and date it exactly

Can't find it in directories in 1884 or earlier, though is there in 1888. Is complicated by renumbering between those dates but can't see it earlier

crikey mike glad i did not put money on the date of the jewellers but i could have sworn it was much earlier than the 1880s

Lyn, the building would have been there so it's confusing isn't it?
We've just popped in for a coffee and met Justin, the son of the managers, Steve and Lesley. I understand it's the same chain as the Wellington in Bennetts Hill. They've made a really good job of the re-fit and we shall definitely go again. Probably on the train so we won't be drinking coffee next time. Fairly empty when we got there around 12 o'clock, Sunday lunchtime but it was filling up nicely by the time we left. I asked about the food and it's good pub grub served 12-5pm Monday to Saturday. Steak and Ale pie, jacket potatoes, sausage and mash etc. and a few specials. Oh - and perhaps I should mention the wall to wall beer pumps with a 'beer board' for choices.
