Hi astonian
My father used to work at Wilmott Breedon and he would bring me with my 2 sisters to the Grotto but we were not allowed in the pub so we would on cold days be left in the corridor with packets of chips.
There in the corridor we would play on the weighing scales the toilets were outside. Customers would have to go through the corridor on their way to the toilets.
When we could play outside we would sit or I would climb along the window ledges of Wilmott Breeden and look at the generators.
My dad played a lot of dominoes in the bar.
One Saturday night he took us across the road right opposite the Grotto to a house where 2 older boys, brothers looked after us.
They were so funny getting up to all sorts of antics. I have forgotten their names but 1 son did join the navy. This is around 1960-1965
I was amazed to see the photo of the Grotto and Camden street.
Thanks so much for putting them on.

Hi.i lived at the Grotto, and the family opposite were the Sweets, the boys were kenny and Raymond, both joined the navy..

Because that was my local and my friends and myself spent a fortune in there and it was always lkur starting pub
For our pub. Crawl yes I recall the sweets and the navvy was always first choice around Camden street for some reason
My other mate whom lived up the road from the grotto and in the second entry of the back to backs joined the navvy as well
It was a great little snugg pub always a great welcome by your parents and always a blazing coal fire to sit around on the winter nights especially
And the old Joanna a playing and every body singing and I always won on the. Card often there. More than the warstone. And the gate
