The Green Dragon

Michael_Ingram

gone but not forgotten
My Great Great Grandfather died December 1853 in Lichfield Street. The inquest on his death was held at the Green Dragon. Any ideas as tp where it was?

Michael there is Green Dragon pub up the market in Walsall. It used to be a court house.

Chris

Thanks Chris but I would have thought that the inquest would have been closer to Lichfield Street which was in the centre of Birmingham where Corporation Street is now

There is also a Lichfield Street in Walsall, Michael. The Green Dragon in Walsall is the only pub I can think of and don't forget, Walsall is only 9 miles from Birmingham and if you follow Lichfield Street in Walsall down to Rushall, you can then go right through Aldridge and then into Birmingham, so there is a link there.

That's quite a coincidence Harborne. It's definitely the Birmingham Lichfield Street I mean; my family lived there from about 1820 untli it was demolished in the 1880s. You could be right about the Walsall Green Dragon though as my Parish Locator software gives the distance between the parishes, Walsall and Birmingham, St Mary's as 5.6 miles.

That is a coincidence, Mike.  Have you managed to find the correct one yet?

John why can't I print the top piece of that you put on, it's about Phillip's Mill, and it's not allowing me to copy :'( :'( :'( :'(
:flower: :cat:

Fantastic John. My Great Great Grandparents lived at 45. Joseph Birch who is on your list was my Great Great Grandmother's first husband. (I could be related to Rod Birch!!)

Lois click at the very end of the text and drag your cursor to the top, which should highlight it all, then just copy (Ctrl Insert) then paste it into Word document (Shift Insert)

John your reply No 6. I NOTE SOME OF THE ADDRESS ARE 21 1/2 & 79 1/2. My GGandad had a shop at 54 1/2 Dale End around 1800.
What is the meaning of the  1/2?

useally when they queezed another abode in they had to call it a half number or they split the house or business which then needed a number

I have picked up 3 Green Dragons in Birmingham:

GREEN DRAGON, 52 (ex 42) Lichfield Street
1841 - Thomas GROVES
1845
1862, 1868 - John TABBERNOR
1873, 1878 - Thomas PINCHBECK

GREEN DRAGON, 115 Lancaster Street
1841 - Job CLARK

GREEN DRAGON, 8 Sheepcote Street

1841 - James ADKIN
1883 - Frederick Archibald BLOOMER
1890 - Charles Henry WHITE
1895 - George HODGKISS
1900 - Mrs Mary Alice NADEN

I wouldn't like to add any ideas what happened before and after.

Hope that's of use
Peter

Thanks for that information Peter. My Great Great Grandfather George lived at 45 Lichfield Street from about 1848 until he died in 1853. He possibly drank at the Green Dragon and knew Thomas Groves.

Michael it is possible our g.g. grandfathers knew each other living only a few doors apart. I also have Birch ancestors and somtime ago you sent me a list of your Birches, but we couldn't make a connection, neither could I find any connection so far with Rod's ancestors.

Yes I remember Sylvia. Most of my Birchs back then were in the dying trade; Lichfied Street, Great Hampton Street and Bristol Street

Please can Peter or anybody, tell me where you got this information? I am researching Mary Alice Naden's (very colourful) life, and would love to know the source of the info that she was the landlady here in 1900. Many thanks!

Peter unfortunately is no longer with us, but he would have got the information from trade directories.
She is listed as being there in 1899 & 1900, but by 1903 another landlord (Thomas R Nicholls). had taken over.
Previous to this (1897) she was at The Vulcan , 20 Lower Fazeley St.
