I am devastated this is the last show Carl will be doing. I love listening not always on Sunday but always on Play Again. We have lost a massive personality who heads the History Of Birmingham. He does so much to help people behind the scene's. For me personally I treat him as a friend thats how he is, he encouraged me way back with my family tree and the work I was involved in at Key Hill Cemetery. He has such enthusiasm for our city's history, I can't believe BBC W.M. have done this to Carl and to us!!!!!!.

Have the BBC given any reason for this (another) very poor decision???? Perhaps Carl was not PC as he broadcast in his Brummie accent.
We who pay the money should have a choice.

hi jimbo i cant see it being anything to do with carls accent as he has been doing this show long enough...why should we try to be something we are not anyway...radio WM need to be asked why they have pulled the plug on this very popular programme so can i suggest that we all ask them...i know i will be

I hope w.m. are inundated with complaints about this . It is the only show of it's kind. I am fed up of all the other "Local " phone in's with people doing nothing but moan about .the state the country is in, Immigration. the N.H.S and the presenters goading them on trying to get hostile reaction to bump up their show's ratings. Carls show was always interesting, and knowledgeble about Birmingham and the surrounding areas. It was always to switch on and hear about "Ordinary " folks lives, history and story's of the great workplaces we have here.
COME BACK CARL.

There are lots of posts on WM's facebook page making comments, which just shows how popular he is. One comment that was made which I thought relevant, is the elderly and housebound who enjoy listening to the nostalgia. It is so sad. My friends Mom recently passed away at 100 she never missed his show after Carl interviewed her about her memories of Brum. I remember how she laughed because he couldn't believe she worked on a press well into her 70's. He had so much time for all ages especially the elderly.

I have just lifted this from W.M.s facebook page.

(BBC WM 95.6FM Carl has been part of the BBC WM story for many years, although this particular programme is ending we very much hope we will work together again and this isn't the last time our listeners hear him on air. We are talking to Carl about future opportunities on the station.)

Am I correct in believing they axed one of his shows before but had to bring him back because of the public outcry?

The birmingham Mail are reporting that the BBC say Carl was too expensive at £270 a show, shame on the BBC!

Macca

What a complete disgrace. To think they only paid this very good presenter £270 per show, what a bargain.

how much are they paying some of the muppets who fail to be of any interest at all
Very sad
John Hughes

The sum of £270 is peanuts for such a important ambassador to Birmingham,I wonder how much BBC TV payed the low life Russell Brand to be on Question Time.

about 6 years ago i attended a talk and slide show given by carl and his archavist keith clenton at the unity club new summer st......from then on i was hooked ...he spoke and everyone was silent and enthralled..he brings the history of birmingham to life so much that you feel as though you have lived through it...he gave me the inspiration to join this forum...gave me many photos from his archives without question..and the rest as they say is history..this city owes him a lot so i do hope that another radio station may snap him up...its the bbc.s loss

When you think of how much money the BBC spend on rubbish - and how much they spend of OUR money sending "executives" on jollies, well it makes my blood boil!!!

So the giants reduced to faceless men in grey suits strike again, eh?

Maybe Carl's problem was selling himself too cheaply. Demand big money like the Jonathan Wosses of this world and people think you must be good, even when you're rubbish.

Both my daughters who looked on Carl as merely "old codgers' hero" changed their minds after meeting him face to face through their degrees or jobs. They now admire him as almost certainly the most knowledgeable Midlands historian - a man with as much passion for the citizens of Birmingham as the city itself.

What do WM have for brains ? Don't answer that !!!! Disgrace to axe Carl's show .......... what will they do , play pop records for 2 hours like all the other so called "local" stations ? HMMmm That'll be interesting ................NOT .

I wish Carl all the best for the future .

hi folks...have just received this email off the editor of WM..and also one off carl which i wont post here but he has asked me to thank you all for your support..all i can say is lets hope that very soon we will have carl back on the airwaves but right now he is totally drained and needs time to consider what to do next...

Dear Lyn

Thanks for getting in touch; I appreciate you taking the time to send me an email

I am very sorry to hear that you are so disappointed by Carl’s Sunday Show coming to an end; I thought I owed it to you to send you a note to explain what is happening.

Carl and I spoke a few months back about his Sunday show – for a variety of reasons I felt we needed to look at the Sunday schedule on BBC WM, bringing in new programmes for Ed Doolan and Jenny Wilkes. At the same time, I began discussing new programme ideas with Carl, something I am still very keen to explore. Like you and many of our listeners, I believe Carl is a WM legend and has made a significant contribution to both this radio station and Birmingham and the Black Country. Carl has asked for time to think about what he wants to do next as he busy with other projects and considering other options and offers, I fully understand and respect that decision.

The important point I wanted you know is that we continue to talk and I do hope that Carl will return to WM’s airwaves in the not to distant future. You and all our listeners will be the first to know when that happens.

I wish you and the history forum all the best for the future

Kind regards

Gareth

A nice reply from the BBC but the fact remains that Carl is a great Brummie & if he has decided he needs a rest then so be it, he has worked tirelessly on behalf of all Brummies, I for one will miss him but if the door is still open in 6 months maybe we will hear him again on WM. It doesn't sound as if pleas & a petition would make any difference so we have to wait & see.
Thanks Carl for everything you have done for Birmingham & its citizens.

This article is unbelievable what an arrogant man Gareth Roberts managing editor is. I do wonder if these people ever speak to anyone over age 20 in Birmingham. I know a lot of housebound elderly folk who so look forward to his Sunday show to reminisce. I know not everyone is a fan of Carl's but what he has done for our local history and the history of the Black Country bringing history to the ordinary folk. His library is extensive and he shares it with everyone. Unlike central Library. He is great ambassador and a Friend. I keep in touch with him often especially after the lovely article he wrote about my gt grandfather. He always asks me how Michael is and a few weeks ago he sent Michael one of his books to cheer him up. How kind was that! Carl has all the problems an ordinary family man has and keeps going despite his Mom being very ill. He loves Birmingham and it's history and I for one stand solidly behind him. I think he has been treated awful.
