I started drinking there when I was 20, I used to meet up with 7 or 8 friends and we'd all pile into the back room and play cards or drink the night away listening to such records as Peter Skellern singing 'You're a Lady'
I really fancied the Landlords' daughter Kim in those days, the problem was, I had the confidence of a dead flea and the social skills of Mike Tyson.
I have to say I can report no success there whatsoever....in fact it was much worse than that, after many weeks of plucking up the courage to ask her out, she even stood me up....but hey! dont feel sorry for me, I learned just after that how to talk to people (notice I said PEOPLE there, not just women...no chauvanist me!) and more to the point, I was both witty and interesting with it (Mr Modesty 1972)
I went out with quite a few girls in that Pub, Judy with the white lipstick, oh yuk!
Denise..mmm, about 5 others from the area, all in all, many happy memories back then!
There were bad ones of course but not many..
I remember 3 weeks after my 21st birthday in 1973, I was in the back room with 4 of my friends, it was quite late and I'd had a few drinks, now...I'm a good drunk, not for me trouble or arguing, I just go tired and quiet, the best kind really.
I remember sitting down on a low stool staring at the floor, I also remember a pair of feet walking past me, the next second I left the chair I was kicked that hard.
He caught me right under the jaw and I remember the half pint of beer I had left went all over a couple sitting next to me.
He did however make one huge mistake...I was too drunk to feel anything and I have always had a clear mind coupled with a cold rage...I was hitting this guy all over the place...while I was doing this I saw my 4 friends running out the door into the Bar, I only then found out that my attacker also had 3 friends with him...
In the Western films when a chair is smashed across someones back, the guy getting bashed simply shrugs it off...It doesn't work that way I'm afraid..I remember being hit by his friend with one of those big bar stools, I completely had the wind knocked out of me as I fell to the floor, I knew exactly what was coming next so I rolled into a ball to protect myself, it was the best I could do....well ding dang diddly, it didn't half hurt!..I could hardly walk for about a week with the damage they did me...I did get 3 of them over the years mind and if I saw the 4th today? I'd buy him a drink...I dont hate these days, you see, in my mind are the thoughts of my Wife, my two daughters and my beautiful little grandaughter, I will not let bad thoughts lie along the ones of those I love...life is too short for that and the girls in my life are too precious,
I truly have only one bad thought of the whole time and that is of my 'friends' who ran out on me...

The flew my 'Friends'
Like birds just set free,
When I needed them most,
There was left only me,
It was one against four
And the blows fell like rain,
But it didn't leave water,
It left blood and pain,
The blood didn't matter,
The pain I could stand,
The thing that hurt most,
They didn't lend me a hand.

Yes 'Old Timer'

I have to say that looking back over the years, The Eagle doesn't really measure up that well among the other Pubs of early memory.
I go past it most days and have seen what they've done to it..
I guess it was always a losing battle there to keep it alive..
Myself, I'd have improved the Pub by detonating a small low yield 25k atomic device just above it...
