My g. grandfather Harry Tabner was publican at The Don Cossack at Hicks Square Birmingham in 1891. Being a complete stranger to Birmingham I wondered if anyone could tell me,
1/ what district is Hicks Square?
2/ does the Don Cossack still exist.?
3/ has anyone any photos/ images of the pub than and now?
4/ are there any stories about the pub I should know about?
many thanks. cybercrone

Hi Linda, The Hicks Square he is on about is in St Bartholomews parish, Bordesley district. As you can see from attachment Hicks Sq, is off Princes St. That would have been where the Imax Cinema is now. There may have been a Hicks Sq, in Ladywood, I dont know.
Further to his questions
2 No
3 Possible but doubtful
4 As 3

P.S Your grandfather must have taken the pub over after the census was taken, At the time a Richard Beasley was licensee. My grandfather would have known that pub well as he only lived round the corner.

Sorry, the 1901 census entry confused me!
"Harry Tabner
. . . Age : 62 ... Born in : 1839 ...
. . . Relation to the head of household: Head ...
. . . Profession: Publican ... Birth county : Cambridgeshire ... Birth parish: Cambridge ...
. . . Address: 2 Hicks Square ... Area: Lady Wood, Birmingham ... "

i don't have a kellys for 1891, but all the ones i do have from 1880 to 1900 give Richard Beasley as the landlord, so possibly your g grandfather was acting as a relief landlord for a time
